I said I would reach out to this list on behalf of a friend who did
indymedia type stuff as I thought this would be a good place to ask.
And i can see it having wider uses as well beyond this small business
type thing.

What about next cloud for this? also contact me or phil if you would be
up for hosting this kind of think for them.
I was thinking moodle's probably not a good fit.

As you suggested, to recap on our conversation:

Third Sector is an accounting co-operative with just short of 300
clients. We are looking to set-up a portal to enable the secure transfer
of documents to and from clients. We may be looking for it serve other
purposes, but Ziggy will be better informed than myself. I had suggested
Moodle, which is why I am in touch with yourself. You have suggested
that from a security perspective Moodle may be problematic, but that
there other open source alternatives. Also, you would not be able to set
up a portal yourself (I think), but can direct us to somebody who could
