[HacktionLab] Proposed presentation: We Can Finally Build Our Own Media

Hi all,

It was suggested I give this a mention, so hello! I'm planning a virtual presentation called We Can Finally Build Our Own Media.

Some of you know me, but I'm a media activist who was involved in IndyMedia, guerrilla documentaries, non-profits and community initiatives in South Yorkshire over the last 20 years (yikes!)

The talk will be centered around the idea of moving on from the same old arguments and misinterpretations of "alternative" media, instead learning from repeated mistakes of the past, what we can take from the successes and failures of IndyMedia, and defining what makes the idea of Local Autonomous Media (or "LoAM") different: it's basically a model based on France's successful Mutu Network, which is a series of connected websites for different localities, horizontal and autonomous, built in the spirit of mutual aid (hence "Mutu"!)

The idea is to give a short presentation on why this is a unique concept unlike anything else, how much discussion some of us have already had with folks in mainland Europe, how they built the network over there, and the options we have to replicate something similar in the UK -- with some Q&A to hopefully provoke discussion, ideas, and of course...action!
