DEMO OVER POLICE MURDER
An innocent young man is dead
Woolwich Somali community demand justice.â¨Community to mount protest
outside
PLUMSTEAD POLICE STATION, LONDON â¨SE18
THIS SATURDAY 1 APRIL, 1:30pm.
(trains go from Charing Cross).
This Saturday will see a picket of Plumstead Police Station, South
East â¨London, to protest at the tragic and suspicious death of 22
year
old â¨Somali man Nuur Saeed as a result of a police operation.
Saeed's death takes place against a backdrop of rising harassment of
the â¨Somali community at the hands of Woolwich Police. Saeed's death
also â¨follows the violent death in custody of Paul Coker, who died on
the â¨floor of a cell in Plumstead Police Station after being arrested
by 15 â¨police officers in his flat last August.
The community in Woolwich are convinced that local police are out of
control and that Somali youth are being singled out for special
treatment.
It is widely held that officers are engaged in a racist vendetta after
â¨two of the suspects allegedly involved in the shooting of WPC Sharon
Beshenivsky in Bradford were two Somali men who have prior links to
Woolwich. Young Somalis report that police are openly boasting they
are â¨out for revenge.
This is the alarming context to the death of Nuur Saeed. Is he the
police's first victim?
The events surrounding Nuurs death are clouded with mystery and his
family are simply demanding to know the whole truth. The explanation
so â¨far provided by the police simply does not add up. What are the
police â¨hiding?
The police say that Nuur was in a house where they executed a search
warrant in Plumstead on Tuesday 10th January. The police say he fell
from a second floor balcony. They say they found him oÂn the pavement.
He⨠was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich, later
transferred to⨠Kings College Hospital where he died of complications
arising from â¨massive brain injury oÂn Tuesday 24th January.
â¨The Justice for Nuur Campaign are demanding that
* There is a truly independent inquiry into the circumstances
surrounding Nuurs death to establish the exact events of 10th January
* There is no police cover-up
* The police officers involved are immediately suspended from duty,
and â¨not allowed to go back oÂn the streets policing our community
* Woolwich Police halt their racist vendetta towards the Somali
â¨community
* There is an immediate and independent investigation into Woolwich
Polices harassment of young men, especially those of the Somali
community
The family and friends of Nuur Saeed have put out a call across all
communities to join them in a peaceful picket of Plumstead Police
Station, Plumstead High Street, this Saturday 4th February at 2pm to
protest at the death of Nuur and to demand justice.
â¨Editors Notes:
* The family are being advised by solicitor Jane Deighton, who
represented Duwayne Brooks during the Stephen Lawrence inquiry into
the â¨investigation carried out by Greenwich Police the same police
force â¨implicated in Nuurs death.
* PC Wayne Bell of Plumstead Police was due in court in January for
offences of racially aggravated public order and a public order
offence â¨after he made alleged racist comments to a man in Plumstead
Police â¨Station in July 2005. (see news section oÂn Independent
Police â¨Complaints Commission website www.ipcc.gov.uk)
