BASQUE ACTIVISTS APPEAL AGAINST EXTRADITION TO SPAIN

Attend the hearing at the High Court at 1030 am and join the protest from 1-2pm!

The appeal by Ana Lopez Monge, Zigor Ruiz Jaso and Iñigo Albisu Hernandez challenging their extradition to Spain will be heard at the High Court in the Strand, London, WC2 at 10.30 a.m. on Tuesday 4th December 2007.

The three were arrested in Sheffield on 27th April 2007 on the basis of a European Arrest Warrant issued by the Spanish Audiencia Nacional investigation court nº5, headed by Baltasar Garzon. The Arrest Warrant seeks their extradition to Spain to face ‘terrorism’ charges. The three have been remanded in custody since their arrest.

Their lawyers are contesting the basis of the charges and argue that their extradition would breach Article 13(b) of the Extradition Act 2003, which prevents the transfer of persons facing the prospect of an unfair trial or detention or punishment on the grounds of their race, religion, nationality, gender, sexual orientation or political opinions.

The defence also contends that the Spanish authorities have concealed important information from the UK justice system, that statements implicating the three were obtained under torture and that information in the case against Hernandez has been manipulated.

Legal representatives of the three, including lawyers from the Basque Country, will be available to discuss the case with the media from 1-2:00 pm outside the High Court when relatives and friends of the Basques will be holding a protest.
