  Canadian artist Emily Carr (1871-1945) has become an icon of celebrated women artists in Canada and is now gaining an international reputation.  She has, however, been the subject of heated historical revision by scholars who have claimed and reclaimed disputed aspects of her personal life at the expense of Carr’s own request that she be first and foremost recognised as a professional artist.  
   
  This illustrated lecture is an examination and analysis of the life, art and historiography of Emily Carr on her own terms and examines Carr’s stance as a religious sceptic and feminist in the face of continued art historical revision that claims her for spirituality, theosophy and animism. Her current status in Canada as an  “eccentric” and a  “genius” flies in the face of the reality of her pauperised, practical and rejected existence by much of her contemporary community and indicts Lawren Harris, a nationally celebrated theosophist artist, for trying to divert Carr into religion in the guise of assisting her professional career. Carr confidently throws Madame Blavatsky away after a few years and asserts her professional status as one of Canada’s most renowned, internationally trained artists, sceptic, and painter of life on the West Coast.
   
  Ellen L. Ramsay is a member of SPES and has degrees in art history from the University of British Columbia (BA), Leeds University (MA) and the University College London (PhD)
