The first person to be convicted in Britain on a charge of disseminating terrorist information was today jailed
for six years.
Abdul Rahman, a Pakistani student, was arrested carrying a "call to arms" letter from a fellow Islamist fighter.

During his trial he admitted disseminating terrorist propaganda and scouting for British Muslims to join the
"holy war" in Afghanistan.

Rahman, 25, was also the first person to be convicted of helping another person to breach a control order by
paying the airfare for a man to flee to Pakistan. He also pleaded guilty to this charge.



Yesterday, the prosecution QC, Parmjit Cheema, told Manchester crown court that Rahman was part of a radical
cell who believed in fighting a holy war in Afghanistan with their "Muslim brothers".
"In essence, they were a group, or cell, of young men all espousing the radical jihad philosophy that states
non-believers in Islam are legitimate targets. In particular, the true followers in Afghanistan are the Taliban."

Rahman came to the UK in September 2004 on a student visa, but the day after enrolling at university in Dundee,
he quit his course and travelled to Manchester, where he met up with other young Muslim men.

Rahman and others lived in Heywood Street, Cheetham Hill, Manchester, at the centre of a large Muslim community
in the city.

When police raided Rahman's house, they found computer discs of speeches given to crowds in Pakistan claiming
"Allah is calling for Jihad".

Speakers also told of the killing of Muslims in Afghanistan and Chechnya and exhorted Muslim mothers: "Rather
than raise coward disco boys, raise brave crusaders."
