Ex-cop accidentally killed himself

A retired Bensalem police officer accidentally killed himself while
attempting to shoot a snapping turtle behind his home in Northampton,
the Bucks County Coroner's office said Friday.

“From the upward trajectory of the bullet, it doesn't appear that this
was anything other than a truly sad accident,” said Bucks County Coroner
Joseph Campbell. “It looks like he was trying to shoot at the turtle,
when he slipped on some logs and accidentally shot himself in the chest.”

Kevin Lawler's body was discovered in the backyard of his home Thursday
afternoon. Investigators also found netting, which Lawler may have used
to try to catch the turtle, Campbell said.

Investigators said the gun used in the accident shooting was a .25
caliber automatic handgun.

Kathleen Lawler, his wife, said a snapping turtle had been attacking
birds on the property.

Kevin Lawler was a former canine officer for the Bensalem Police
Department. He was lauded by Bensalem Township in 2002 after breaking
through a fence and jumping onto a deck engulfed in flames to save a
trapped dog.

Lawler served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War.
