‘Five Muslim community workers have accused MI5 of waging a campaign of blackmail and harassment in an attempt to recruit them as informants.  The men claim they were given a choice of working for the Security Service or face detention and harassment in the UK and overseas’.  This account began a front-page article in The Independent on 21 May 2009.  MI5 had told the men, 'Work for us or we will say you are a terrorist.'  When they refused to cooperate, MI5 acted on the threat; some were detained and interrogated on trips abroad.

Such practices are widespread yet rarely gain publicity.  MI5 has blackmailed hundreds of refugees, who face much higher stakes: they could be deported to torture, or else they could be granted asylum as a reward for becoming police informers.  In most cases, MI5 wants information on political views and ordinary political activities.  In the name of protecting ‘national security’, the UK insecurity agencies spread fear and distrust among communities here.

This meeting has several aims:

To expose MI5 practices of blackmail
To encourage protest by individuals who have been blackmailed
To demand accountability for such crimes from the government.
The event is sponsored by Campaign Against Criminalising Communities (CAMPACC), CagePrisoners, The London Somali Youth Forum, Kurdish Federation UK, Islamic Human Rights Commission, Campaign Against Racism and Fascism (CARF)
