<P class=style24 align=justify>America is gripped by concern over wholesale and secret government spying on citizens’ personal communications following recent revelations in the New York Times. But the story is not new — just news to journalists and lawmakers who were not paying attention. <BR><BR>Investigative journalist Duncan Campbell has made headlines telling the story for thirty years. In 1976, Campbell revealed for the first time the existence of Britain’s largest spying agency, GCHQ, for which he, a fellow Time Out journalist, and a government whistleblower were charged under the UK’s notorious Official Secrets Act.</P>
<P class=style24 align=justify>In 1986, Campbell’s programme about plans for the first-ever British spy satellite for the BBC2 series Secret Society was banned from airing. As the affair exploded, the then-director general of the BBC, Alasdair Milne, was peremptorily sacked. </P>
<P class=style24 align=justify>In 1999, the European Parliament asked Campbell to report on the global scale of international communications spying and the “Echelon” system. <BR><BR>Join us, as Duncan Campbell talks about these issues in the new contexts of the 21st Century, and presents programmes he has made, including “The Hill” (Channel 4 Dispatches), a look inside the largest electronic intelligence centre in the world, in the heart of Yorkshire, England. </P><BR>
<P class=style24 align=justify><STRONG>The Centre for Investigative Journalism</STRONG> is a non-profit organisation of journalists committed to training and defending aggressive reporting of injustice, corruption, and incompetence. It is based at City University, London.</P><BR>
