Just to let you know my live chat with BBC Newcastle this morning went well and even the interviewers had to accept that their arguments against criminalising men and for legalising prostitution were "shot through"! </DIV>

are women. Being involved in <BR>prostitution simply made them easier targets. Melanie Reid writes that <BR>we should expect violence against women in prostitution to continue <BR>until such time as prostitution is legalised (Tuesday 12th December). <BR>This is a seriously flawed argument.<BR><BR>Firstly the experience of prostitution is deeply harmful to women in <BR>and of itself. Legalising prostitution will not remove this harm, but <BR>simply make it legalised harm. In order to endure the experience of <BR>repeated unwanted sex, the women need to dissociate, either by <BR>‘splitting off within their head, or through use of drugs or alcohol. <BR>Inevitably then, women who get involved in prostitution in order to <BR>fund a drug problem will enter a vicious spiral, in that they will <BR>increase their drug intake in order to be able to cope with the <BR>prostitution. Women who enter
prostitution for other reasons, such as <BR>debt, will usually start to use drugs.<BR><BR>Secondly, it is patent nonsense to suggest that any form of regulated <BR>or legalised prostitution would tolerate women who were noticeably drug <BR>addicted. These women, the most desperate and consequently the most <BR>vulnerable, would not be permitted to work in either brothels or so <BR>called ‘tolerance zones’. Furthermore if ‘tolerance zones’ were to be <BR>established, it is certain that any street prostitution outwith such <BR>zones would be strongly discouraged, resulting in the most vulnerable <BR>women being further criminalised. Legalising prostitution would <BR>certainly benefit those men who wish to use women in prostitution, but <BR>would do nothing for the women most at risk.<BR><BR>Women in prostitution need access to safe accommodation, effective <BR>addiction services, and
support to escape prostitution. However <BR>prostitution will continue as long as there is a demand from men to buy <BR>sex. That demand stems from gender inequality, and is exacerbated by <BR>the eroticisation of inequality, especially through pornography. The <BR>only effective long-term solution therefore is to recognise the root <BR>causes, and to challenge the demand from men to buy sex. <BR></BLOCKQUOTE><BR>
