And in the past was one factor in the<BR>>spread of venereal disease. It was, and still may be, a<BR>>source of financial independence for poor women.<BR>><BR>>Like other illegal and stigmatised activities it has come to<BR>>be associated with and controlled by organsed crime, pimps and<BR>>drug pushers. It has<BR>>been used to coerce women into 'selling their bodies' a form of<BR>>sex slavery, and is at the
root of todays trafficking of women<BR>>and girls.<BR>><BR>>Sex workers have also been the target of physical, sexual,<BR>>social and political attack, within a society that stigmatises<BR>>them and condones or accepts the violence towards them,<BR>>sometimes by those authorised to 'control' or punish them for<BR>>what they do.
