No Gods, No Masters and a Happy New Year from all of us at HIC.<BR><BR><STRONG>Zero de Conduit. 1933, France, 44mins.</STRONG><BR><BR>A repressive hot house of a boarding school with rigid and ridiculous behavioural codes allowed Jean Vigo to construct a surreal call for anarchy that was banned in France until 1945. Failure to comply with the rules results in the pupils getting a ‘zero for conduct’ and the stage is set to question authority and revolt.Packed with strange and subversive ideas and anti-establishment symbolism the film was a key influence on Lindsay Anderson's... <BR><BR><BR><STRONG>if....1968, UK, 111mins.</STRONG><BR><BR>A provocative, savage and wickedly funny masterpiece, 'if....', uses the English public school setting not to affirm tradition, but to launch an attack on authoratarianism and the way the Establishment rules by dividing and co-opting. The students at College House are kept in line by conformity, fear and prefects - the repressive conditions are carefully portrayed through a blend of English surrealism and near-documentary style realism to astonishing effect - as is the painful nature of rebellion when confronting the brutality of the institution.
