<P><FONT face="Verdana, Helvetica, Arial"><FONT size=5><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 18px"><FONT color=#444444><B><BR></B></FONT></SPAN></FONT><FONT size=4><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 14px">Leyla Zana, a prominent Kurdish spokesperson and former political prisoner in Turkey, is making her first visit to <SPAN class=yshortcuts id=lw_1210952515_1 style="CURSOR: hand; BORDER-BOTTOM: #0066cc 1px dashed">London</SPAN> since her release in 2004 to put the case for a peaceful resolution of the ongoing conflict between the Turkish state and the Kurds. <BR><BR>It came to world attention once again with Turkey’s recent armed intervention in northern Iraq, but Leyla will argue that a military solution is not an option and that the EU and other major international players need to take urgent action to avert a resurgence of the conflict that can only add to the instability of an already unstable Middle East. The repression meted out to this year’s Newroz celebrations has
been followed by increased repression of the Kurds, exacerbating tensions inside Turkey.<BR><BR>Leyla Zana is a courageous and inspiring figure. During her inauguration as Member of the Turkish National Assembly in 1991, Leyla took her oath of allegiance in Turkish as required by law, but ended with a phrase spoken in Kurdish: “I have completed this formality under duress. I take this oath for the brotherhood between the Turkish people and the Kurdish people.” For this she received a ten-year prison sentence during which time she came to symbolise the determination of the Kurdish people’s struggle for peace, justice and human dignity. Undeterred by incarceration and ongoing prosecution, she continues to be a passionate advocate for peace and is now one of the most powerful voices from the Kurdish side. Leyla is the recipient of the EP Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, the Rafto Prize and the Bruno Kreisky Award. <BR>
