Allo
Coupla things for list discussion / Monday meeting...
#Sharrow Lantern Carnival - space for storing lanterns? Agree to holding
workshops?
#Affordable space project - overlap with MATILDA futures...?
First: Highfield want Sharrow Lantern Carnival to move stuff from there.
Q: Is there room at MATILDA? E.g. in the big empty space that was the
chill-out zone at the No Borders party?
I think this could be a great thing: having lanterns there, going on to
have some workshops there - kinda insinuating ourselves into an existing
community project. (And MATILDA is, technically, in Sharrow...)
Second: Affordable space project. This is something me and a few others
are starting, following the closure of the Blind Institute. (They're
getting a purpose built building, and the old one's being replaced with
student flats.)
The blind institute was used for a huge range of community events, from
refugee-based things to peace meals to Insanza etc etc...
There's now a huge big hole where there used to be a community events
space, with usuable kitchen...
You can see the overlap with the previous MATILDA futures group, I
hope... although it's a bit more of a venn diagram, I think.
I will be able to do some of this as part of my job too: one thing I'm
hoping to do is organise a group to go talk to a range of experts in
their fields, e.g. sympathetic property developers, planning aid etc.
So the group as a whole should get a solid understanding of how property
works in Sheffield and the CIQ, and whether there's a hope in hell of
getting a space...
I also think we could potentially find a way to factor in the DIY
element. Usually, that's impossible. What we should be able to do is
look at MATILDA, and, say, the Basement, work out how much work we /
they did voluntarily, how much it would have cost, show the savings...
Of course, no-one would volunteer if they didn't think it was the
community's, and certainly not if it was owned by another company...
Anyway... something to talk about at Monday's meeting, maybe? The key
thing to say is: who'd be interested in joining the group?
