'Not-for-profit' or 'non-profit' refers to an organisation that ploughs any profit back into the organisation's budget, not one that does not seek to make a profit. It does not mean a dissociation from commercial activity. As anyone who has ever tried to run any sort of business knows, profit is what allows a business to operate. It might be more helpful to think of non-profits as 'not-for-excessive-profit' organisations or 'not-profit-dominated' organisations.
