Thanks Gav for a thoughtful E-Mail, and sorry that you
felt shitty about the process. I'm not going to
comment on most of your points, just look at the
security question.

After the No-borders party I brought my concerns to
the Monday meeting, which caused us to have a fairly
long discussion about parties / gigs etc. One of my
main concerns was with no's of people. In advance of
that party sign up sheets were put up for 2 people on
the door and 2 on the bar - 4 people at any given
time. What transpired was more like a need for 2-4 on
the bar 2 taking money and 3-4 doing secuity i.e. 7-10
people at any one time. Assuming you let people have
half the night off, that means a team of 14-20 people
running the night.

I don't think we can organise events and then expect
Matilda people to forgoe other social engagments /
commitments and turn up and work for a night because
no-body has veoted the staging of an event.

In our staging an event guideline it states that 1
Matilda person must get involved. As I've pointed out
it needs to be 14-20. This agreement should be sought
before the event is agreed - it is a big ask.

This is the nature of DIY, things are cheap, but you
have to do more work.

I think this really feeds into the question of how
often we can have this kind of event (i.e. Friday /
Saturday night party / gig).

Also it in a very real way brings us back to a
question of 'Is the event political'. I think there
are 2 levels here: 1/ Its DIY - so therefore
political. 2/ Its directly political.

In terms of getting Matilda people to help run an
event its probably easier to get them to do more
political stuff. I won't put myself out to help run a
cutting - egde DIY electro night as much as I would
for a benefit for a new protest site for instance.

We also need to consider the physical security of
people doing security. Basically we are asking
Matilda people to put themselves on the front line of
city centre, weekend night, nightclub zone security
with no training. I have a little Martial Arts
training but am worried by the possibilities.

I am worried by the number of events that are planned
for the near future and about our capacity to mamange
them safely. If you do a one off (or 2 off or 3 off)
squat party at a venue - people (the liscensing
authorities / gangsters) don't really have the chance
or profit incentive to get organized to exploit you /
rip you off. But if you keep doing it at the same
venue you allow that opportunity.

Sorry to sound so negatitive. And I'm genuinely glad
that its sounds like Saturday went well.

love
Rocky
