Hello,

People needed for a climate action this saturday - see below for details -
meet at 12 noon at the peace gardens. bring swimming related props -
goggles, water wings etc. we'll need people to leaflet and petition, and
explain what the clowns are up to.

theres an online petition against the regional supercasino being in
sheffield. sign at www.petitiononline.com/BPM06

"An inconvenient truth" - al gores film about climate change is showing at
the Showroom cinema from 22nd. we thought it'd be a good opportunity to
leaflet, engage with the punlic re climate change. if you want to
volunteerto do leafletting any evening from the 23rd til the 28th sept, let
me know(it'll prbably be going on after that too...) and i'll try and
co-ordinate getting someone there everyday. Apparently its a good film, so
get all your mates to go and watch it.
There are various leaflets we can use, but i'm open to suggestions if anyone
has anything really appropriate.

Hope you're all well and happy.

Cheers, Julie

Climate Emergency! Everyday heroes needed!

What's the emergency?
"The government and Sheffield council need to get real on climate change and
take action urgently. There's a lot we all can do but we need the government
and the council to take a lead and make climate friendly behaviour possible
and easy."
So say Sheffield Campaign against Climate Change who are organising an
event this Saturday 16th September, the National Day of Action on Climate
Change.

What's happening this Saturday?
At 12 midday, this Saturday, in the Peace Gardens Sheffield, clowns will be
attempting rescue operations for citizens from very wet places -an alert to
the chaotic weather and flash floods that are in store for us. Sheffield
people are invited to join in with water wings, arm-bands, life jackets etc
and show their support by signing the petition. The petition calls on
Sheffield Council to set targets to reduce carbon dioxide emissions across
the city by 3% annually.
Everybody can be a hero and do something to reduce climate change. Free
energy saving light bulbs will be given to people keen to play their part.

What can Sheffield Council do?
Sheffield Council can make a real difference. We need services that
encourage us to leave our cars behind and save energy in our homes. Now many
people take to their cars because the bus fairs are too expensive and
service irregular. Sheffield used to have the best bus service in the
country. Lets get it back! Many people would cycle more if cars were'nt
making it so dangerous. We need a much improved cycle lane network. The
council and all of us need to stop the proposed M1 widening scheme. This
will massively increase greenhouse gases and traffic congestion in our
region. Many people want to insulate their homes and even invest in their
own renewable energy such as having a wind-turbine or solar panels. Lets get
the council to take a lead. We need to know if we are making a difference.
An annual target is necessary to give us this feedback. In the United
States, California has set itself a target for carbon dioxide reduction. It
did not wait for President Bush to take a lead. Sheffield can do it too. We
don't need to wait for Blair. If Sheffield sets a target of 3% carbon
dioxide reduction year on year, this will provide a motivator for climate
friendly actions across the city, and be an inspiration to us in Sheffield
and across the country.

What is Sheffield Campaign against Climate Change?
Sheffield Campaign against Climate Change is a broad based friendly
organisation. We believe action is needed now to avert catastrophic climate
change. The earth's climate is warming up, causing extreme weather, floods,
droughts, storms and heat waves. The vast majority of climate scientists
agree the main cause is burning coal and oil producing "greenhouse gases"
which cause the earth to heat up and destabilise the climate. Climate
change will disrupt our lives in Sheffield but will cause death and
suffering for millions of people world wide, mostly the poor. Climate
change is a global problem and needs effective and fair solutions at
international, national, local and individual levels.
