Since 2001, successive anti-terror laws have impacted heavily on
ethnic minorities and on Muslims, mainly on refugees but also on
British citizens. They have been kept in various forms of detention
without trial, including partial house arrest under control orders,
detention without charge for up to 28 days, and prison or house
arrest pending deportation, possibly to torture. Campaigners have
been giving the detainees practical support and demand that they be
released immediately.
** AT THIS MEETING, SPEAKERS WILL EXAMINE: **
The injustices meted out to 'terrorism suspects' by the Special
Immigration Appeals Commission (SIAC), detention and house arrest
without fair trial, based on accusations often arising from secret
evidence
The government's current threat to re-introduce internment, this
time for British as well as foreign 'terrorism suspects', following
difficulties in the use of control orders
The dangers and impact of the new proposed "Stop and Quiz" power.
The government seeks to give the police power to stop and interrogate
anyone in public places. The right to "no comment" would no longer be
valid and anyone refusing to respond to police questioning could be
arrested.
The links between control orders, detentions and other
anti-terrorism measures; in particular how lengthy pre-charge
detention and the proposed new 'stop and question' power will
intensify the climate of fear, especially for Muslim communities
The need for a speedy and fair trial, or release without charge for
all suspects in terrorism cases; and how to build support for this
demand amongst Muslim and non-Muslim communities
The need for immediate day-to-day solidarity with detainees and
their families, and how people can get involved.
