Subject: Details to pass on for Sheffield area Carbon Reduction Action Group
(CRAG)
To: Patrick Gillett <paddygillett at googlemail.com>

Thanks Paddy,

I appreciate your offer to pass on details to those who
might be interested.

*Public meeting to form the group* :

5.45pm Thursday 13th March, Blue Moon cafe (next to Sheffield anglican
cathedral), 2 St James' St. Those interested please e-mail
sheffieldarea.crag at yahoo.co.uk. Folks from surrounding area (Barnsley,
Chesterfield, NE Derbyshire & Rotherham) are also very welcome and if there
are enough of them I'll help them start something more local to them. If
anyone can't get there for the start, they are still welcome - if they could
just let me know their ETA.

The basic principles are :

1. Members measure their carbon footprint from their household energy (coal,
electricity, gas) and private travel by air and by motorised vehicles (e.g.
car) using an agreed method. CRAGS in other parts of the UK have worked out
rules for dealing with multiple occupancy, children etc...

2. They set an annual target (e.g. 4 tonnes CO2) which reduces year on year
towards a sustainable target per head.

3. The group works together sharing knowledge, experience and providing
encouragement to achieve the target. And socialise. The finding from other
groups in the UK is that people become a lot more carbon conscious.

4. The details of the exact CRAG scheme(s) to be set up will be discussed at
a meeting. We will be looking at ways to attract funding to provide
incentives for people such as tenants with limited control of the energy
efficiency of their homes to participate ; how we might support local good
causes linked to climate change such as flood relief fund ; and lastly, an
educational scheme using virtual money that might be of value in schools.

Regards

Rick Morgan
