Here is a copy of the press release for Saturday - again forward to anyone else who may be interested:

Clowns Driving Through Action on Climate Change

The Clandestine Insurgent Rebel Clown Army will be entertaining passers by with their antics exposing the misery that traffic can bring. This saturday [1] a gaggle of clowns will amass in the Peace Gardens with bumper cars and a picnic, offering the public a choice between "traffic jam" and "strawberry jam". Reducing the use of the private motor car by better public transport and encouraging walking and cycling is one of a raft of measures that the City Council must adopt to reduce CO2 emissions sufficiently to avoid catastrophic climate change.

The clown action is part of Sheffield Campaign against Climate Change [2], who will be hitting the streets to get people to demand urgent action from the City Council on CO2 emissions . They have a petition which will be presented to the City Council on 3rd October asking for annual 6% reductions in city-wide CO2 emissions.

Rebecca Bryson from the group said "Time is running out. We desperately need to make drastic reductions in our CO2 emissions. The solutions already exist. What is lacking is the political will to make the necessary changes. Low carbon living can offer a better quality of life for many, with better public transport, well insulated homes and locally produced goods and services".

Notes to Editors:

[1] The event will commence 12 noon in the Peace Gardens on Saturday 15th September.

[2] See sheffield.campaigncc.org for details of local group and national campaign and information regarding climate change
