Hi everyone, just in case you've all forgotten (as I almost did!), there's a
student enviro committee meetup tomorrow, to figure out how we can better
represent students on the Vice Chancellor's Group for the Environment & its
subcommittees!!!
Thursday *3pm -tomorrow!*
*Activist Space,*
(upstairs in the Campus Centre)
see below for more detail,
Tim
_____________________________________________________________
Dear All,
There will be a meeting to discuss how this committee will function etc, on
Thursday the 8th of October at 3pm, to be held at Clayton Campus, in the
student activist space.
The date for the first meeting will also be agreed up, for the week
beginning Monday the 19th of October.
Please send this information on to all your networks, If you are interested
in coming along to find out more, offer your suggestions or would like to
get involved to ensure this group functions well, then please attend on
Thursday or contact cathy.gibson at adm.monash.edu.au.
*Who can get involved?*
Everyone! This committee will be open to all students would like to
represent a student group, club, society, faculty or course, and are willing
to report back. (Please send this on!)
*Background*
Currently 9 environmental committees report to the VCGE: Waste, Water,
Greenhouse Challenge, Carbon Footprint, I.T, Food, Purchasing and
Sustainable Development (Buildings).
However there is not enough student representation on each committee and
this is not representing a wide section of student population. For example
most of the representation is from Clayton Campus.
Some of the initiatives accepted through these committees have included a
commitment 20% energy reduction, purchasing 10% renewable energy, purchasing
only recycled paper, a compost trial at vendors in the campus centre and
more.
Students fought for the commitment to reduce GH emissions by 20% by 2010. Do
you know how much has been reduced and if enough is being done to achieve
these aims? Here’s your opportunity to make sure we do! The student voice is
powerful, and without you these committees cannot make the changes you want
for a sustainable future!
*Student Environment Committee*
In order to improve the situation the students from MSA Environment have
suggested a student committee to report to the 9 committees on the relevant
issues and also raise issues to the vice chancellors committee directly.
This committee has the potential to:
- Raise issues to put to committees
- Gain updates on what is happening through the committees
- Find out when the committee meetings are held if you’d like to attend
- A great way to share ideas and resources
