*
*1.0 **News from the garden*
*1.1 **What’s growing?*
*1.1.1 *A female pumpkin has recently appeared though fruiting is not
expected.
*1.1.2 *Beans and peas have been planted in one of the Northern beds
however they are being munched by some of the local wildlife.
*1.1.3 *The bed nearest the tool shed was planted out with root
vegetables – beetroot, radish and carrots.
*1.1.4 *Silverbeet from the same bed were transplanted to the old
potato bed, nearest the Southern entrance, and don’t appear to be faring too
well.
*1.1.5 *The warrigal greens got a pruning back and the sweet potato
runners were burries under the soil to promote root and sweet potato growth.
*1.1.6 *Some seeds being propagated in one of the labs are about a
week off being ready to be planted which include broccoli and other
brassicas.
*1.2 **What’s good to pick now?*
*1.2.1 *The alpine strawberries appear to still be fruiting.
*1.2.2 *And the perennials are, as always, available for harvest
including the warrigal greens and nasturtiums.
*1.3 **How are the worms?*
*1.3.1 *The worms are going well however the bins need to be rotated
every two weeks to prevent build up
*1.3.2 *If the food builds up too far the bins will turn anaerobic
which will encourage micro-organisms that produce foul odours - not nice!
*1.4 **What’s the weather and local wildlife like?***
*1.4.1 *The weather has been nice though there hasn’t been much rain.
*1.4.2 *As for the wildlife, we found a little mouse in the compost –
his name is Tinkerbell (Tink).
*1.4.3 *We’re still trying to figure out what’s munching out peas and
beans but suspect it could be the possums and Tickerbell.
*1.5 **How’s the pond?*
*1.5.1 *The pond still seems to be leaking from the same spot and
possibly others. Fixing the leak could be quite difficult over the coming
season due to the wet weather so another method may be required before
spring comes.
*1.6 **Working bee & workshop report backs!*
*1.6.1 *We have almost completed the temporary greenhouse – just need
to attach the sides and place the seedlings inside.
*1.6.2 P*hotos are available (contact Cassie)
*1.7 **Project updates*
*1.7.1 *Sign
*1.7.1.1 *We are in discussion currently about having our very own permie
people (Jay and Shruchi) doing the pyrography on the timber frame of the
sign along with the small signs in the garden beds.
*1.8 **Uni liaison report backs, achievements and opportunities*
*1.8.1 *Blackburn Rd proposal is well under way.
*1.8.1.1 *Large piece of land with opportunities for a Wholefoods
relationship, community involvement and volunteer opportunities.
*1.8.1.2 *Satellite images attached to email.
