I hope you've received the forwarded email we originally sent re. Garden
signage.<br>

Gail Morgan from the Monash Student Association is organising a meeting
with Gary and Peter Barnes which may happen on Friday, so if this email
simply provides background for that, then wonderful and sorry for filling
your inbox. I haven't been told exactly what details we're meeting
about, so this may all still be utterly relevant.<br>
<br>
I'm still not sure if the plan from the Uni's end is to run with the plan
we sent (forwarded to you) or if something more 'slick' is required.
I'm also not sure if the Uni plans to help with A-frame sized signs to
put at the various entrances to the garden area, particularly the Nth-East
& Sth-East corners where the path runs between the Campus Centre &
the garden. Otherwise we will make these ourselves.<br>
<b><br>
Materials</b><br>
The original idea was to leave materials somewhat open to Gary's gleaning
abilities and initiative, though we're happy to help with sourcing, once
we know what second hand, recycled or reclaimed materials Gary can easily
lay his hands on and therefore what else there is to procure.<b><br>
</b><br>
We have, for example, recently aquired a lot of window glass which was
going to be thrown out. We also have some corrugated iron off-site
which could be cleaned up and used as shed roofing and/or wall/screen (depending
on shed size & other materials used). Mark Corea also kindly
gave us some wooden bench-slats which were being thrown out, to use as
stakes or for minor construction.<br>
<br>
One of our garden members suggested that the bench-slats Mark gave us could
be fastened together to make the board for the sign. Text could be
engraved into the wood, or sheet metal which could be bolted onto the sign.
The slats may otherwise be useful as stakes for the sign or as shed-building
materials.<br>
<br>
I'm also meeting with Mark Doggett from The Office of Environmental Sustainability
on Friday to inspect materials currently stored in Building 56 from the
Uni 'cleanup'.<br>
<br>
In summary...<i><br>

We have:</i><br>
2nd hand glass<br>
Timber slats<br>
(Probably) sheet metal from old filing cabinets etc.<br>

Screen from tea-tree/brush or 2nd hand lattice (shed)<br>

Timber from arborists, not commercial forestry (shed, sign)</font>

<br><font size=3>FSC certified timber (shed, sign)</font>
<br><font size=3>re. treated timber, we are running an organic garden,
so if the sign is to be located near growing areas, we will want to avoid
potential sources of leaching. If attached to the shed nearby, the
situation may be different.</font>

Shed</b> <b>Location</b><br>
David, Mark and I have identified a few potential shed locations, but a
final location has, as far as I understand, never been confirmed.
A shed for large items/materials on the back of the Chem Lab Gas storage
block would be useful, provided we also had another spot right at the garden
for commonly used tools. This decision may decide the viability of
the [good] idea to attach signage to the shed.<br>
<br>
We've recently realised our current make-shift shed can probably be modified
to fit snugly and discretely under the bench at the garden, and we have
plans to build more benches with storage to be housed on site where our
gazebo/pergola is planned.<br>
<br>
