Unfortunately they don't really work in terms of actually stopping the kind of
things you mention above, but, they are a means of informing people of what's
happening. 

But then again signing a piece of paper isn't really an effective form of
political participation either is it?

Only direct-action really achieves the results we're looking for, but how do we
get people into direct-action?
