Shetland's humanity shames Whitehall
immigration officers dropped in and took him back to jail. Thanks to an
error at the Home Office, he is paying for his stupid, youthful mistake
a second time. His deportation hearing is set to take place in North
Shields, Tyneside, on Friday.

06: Meeting: Iraq Occupation Focus

7pm, 13th July at the Indian YMCA,
41 Fitzroy Square, W1.

We are very pleased that Hassan Juma'a, President of the General Union
of Oil Workers in Basra, will be our guest speaker at our next meeting
on Thursday 13 July, 7.30pm, Indian YMCA, 41 Fitzroy Square, WC1
(nearest tube Warren Street).

Hassan is a friend and supporter of IOF. We were inspired by his speech
at the teach-in last year. This is a very important time for the GUOE -
its bank account has been frozen and it is subject to repressive laws
restricting public sector trade union activity. The GUOE needs our
support and we need to be informed about trade union struggles, and
daily life in Basra.

A Report on Destitute Asylum Seekers and Refugees
Living on the Streets of Leicester
Next year there will be celebrations to mark the 200th anniversary
of the abolition of the slave trade ... we need to consider the social
action that brought about this change in 1807 - we still have forms
of slavery in these destitute people, child soldiers, human trifficking.
What are we doing about this now?

Asylum seeking children in the UK are particularly hard hit by the UK’s
draconian immigration policy.
Around 2000 children are imprisoned in detention centres each year –
some for up to 9 months
Many unaccompanied children seeking asylum live in inappropriate
placements with no adult to care for them.
Many are not receiving adequate support
On reaching 18 young people may be sent back to their countries of
origin despite having no more connections there.

11: Stop shuttling asylum seeking children around Europe

Children seeking asylum are being put in danger by an EU regulation
allowing them to be sent from one country to another, the Refugee
Council says today.

European agencies call for reform of Dublin II Regulation
ECRE member agencies have today sent a public letter to European
Commissioner Frattini challenging the EU's 'Dublin Rules'. The agencies
state that these rules put the lives of people fleeing persecution at
risk and cause unecessary suffering. They urge Frattini to look again at
the legislation and address its shortcomings.
