Asylum policy forces officials to go for soft targets

Minors conflict
But the conduct of local authorities over their treatment of young
asylum seekers was called into question this month in evidence given by
the children's commissioner to a joint parliamentary committee on human
rights.
Drafts of the reform plans have already been greeted with dismay...

Uncorrected Transcript Of Oral Evidence
We have written today to the chief executive to express our extreme
concern about that in the way in which children are being treated.
We have not looked in detail at other authorities but we understand that
there are other authorities which are employing the same practice

Children: UN Conventions
When they will withdraw their reservation to Article 22 of the United
Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child affecting immigration and
nationality law.
The retention of the reservation, however, does not mean that vulnerable
children do not have the protection of the UK's own laws. We are
satisfied that asylum-seeking children in the UK receive adequate care,
protection and support. In addition, domestic legislation also provides
protection under the Human Rights Act and the Children Act.

Local Government Finance
There is a lack of overall financial provision for post- 16 to 18 age
groups.
The funding methodology used by the Department for Education and Skills

Conference for all Asylum Seekers in Glasgow
Last Saturday (27th January), more than 60 of Glasgow's asylum seekers
and supporters came to a conference. After a day of discussions, it was
decided to form a Committee of asylum seekers. Expect more details later
and expect to hear a lot more in 2007!

What goes on at Unity?
For an idea of some the things that happen around the office and for
some stories of the people who we try to help, read this online diary.
It's not an "official" account or anything but it's written by one of
the volunteers here and the rest of us like it. Please read it, and
encourage others to do so too. If you have webspace of your own,
consider linking to it to get spread the word about what we do here!

Brides without Borders: Valentine’s Day Appeal
So, you’ve met “the one”, fallen head over heels in love and decided to
tie the knot

and now you just have to ask the Home Secretary, John Reid, for his
permission!!!
Unbelievable?
Unfortunately, this is really happening in 21st century Britain: if you
want to marry ANY non-European, you MUST have the Home Secretary’s
express permission. The High Courts have ruled against this
discriminatory practice, but the government continues to deny people the
right to marry the person they choose.
