We are trying to raise money to get it printed. What would be good is to put down a central No Border contact for people who want campaigns. I guess this could then help No Border groups make a lot motre connections with the undocumented. However if you agree could you say what central number/email/addresses or even local group contacts we can put. I've realised that most of what we have (including I think London No Borders0 are useless as they all seem to go through some "moderator" and then get lost in space! Maybe this can be discussed and sorted out at the Glasgow get together? Cheers Steve Cohen -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We are composed of groups & individuals with a wide variety of political & religious views. We are politically non-aligned, but we are also committed to oppose any racist backlash. Bristol STW is not a 'membership' organisation. Any one or group opposed to the 'war on terror' can consider themselves part of Bristol STW, or can continue to be publicised by us while choosing to organise independently of the Coalition. We don't claim (or seek) a monopoly over anti-war sentiment & activity in the city & recognise that many groups & individuals have their own ways of opposing the 'war on terror'. We are also dependent on individual donations for our funding, so if you are able to make a donation please send a cheque or postal order, payable to: Bristol Stop The War Coalition. Post: BSTWC c/o 23 Monmouth Rd, Bristol BS7 8LF. Or you can email us privately : bristolstopwar at hotmail.com EDITORIAL : A WOUNDED PREDATOR IS MORE DANGEROUS Jeremy Clarke of Bristol-Stop-The-War writes: "Four years ago this month the USA, with British support, set out on the latest stage of its bid to control the Middle East & the oil supplies of the region (See Section 3). Superior technology ensured some initial military successes, but today, for all the horror they inflicted on Iraq, Bush & Blair have failed. The vast majority of people in Iraq have opposed the occupation. The Americans have tried to create divisions among the Iraqi people to enable them to maintain control. American & British casualties mount. What support there was for the invasion in the USA & Britain has rapidly disappeared. The American & British people are clear that they were led into war on the basis of lies. As Blair & Bush plan to leave office those seeking to take their places are trying to distance themselves from the debacle. In Britain, government ministers, who in 2003 could have resigned, & had some impact on Blair's decision to support the invasion, now try to distance themselves from the adventure, as if they were never really involved. Only Blair & Bush, & their close circles, still try to justify the invasion in anything but the vaguest terms. It would be easy to think America wouldn't dare to try the same trick again. But we musn't forget that the people of Iraq (& Afghanistan) are still living under occupation; hundreds of thousands have been killed; life for those who have survived is worse than before the invasion. So much for liberation & re-construction. As Noam Chomsky pointed out in the Guardian, "A predator becomes even more dangerous & less predictable when wounded. In desperation to salvage something, the administration might risk even greater disasters." One 'greater disaster' is already underway - Bush's so-called 'surge'. This is a further attempt to pacify the Iraqis & quell all opposition to the occupation. It stands as little chance of success as earlier attempts - the result will be more Iraqi deaths & more destruction. The other 'greater disaster' being prepared is an attack on Iran - re-running the WDM pantomime of 2002/3. The anti-war movement in the USA & Britain has been tremendously successful in ensuring that the invasion & occupation has stayed at the top of the political agenda in both countries. The 4th anniversary of the invasion offers us an opportunity to remind people of these 'greater disasters' - actual and potential. END THE OCCUPATION OF IRAQ - DON'T ATTACK IRAN." [127631] I have considered the impact of the proposed changes to ESOL funding as part of the Race Equality Impact Assessment (REIA) and I am minded to consider a range of new measures in addition to those the LSC previously announced on 18 October 2007 to reprioritise funding towards the most vulnerable. These are: Re-instating eligibility for those asylum seekers who are in the UK legally and whose claims are not resolved within six months; Re-instating eligibility for those asylum seekers who are unable to return or be returned to their country of origin for circumstances beyond their control and who are eligible for Section 4 support; Prioritising funding at local level through the Learning and Skills Council?s Learner Hardship Support Fund towards support for spouses and individuals who may not have access to their household benefit documentation or their own funds; and Agreeing with the Learning and Skills Council an approach to evidencing low pay for fee remission purposes which enables flexible use of a raft of evidence, including wider benefits and other evidence. I have asked officials to work with the Learning and Skills Council and other partners to finalise the detail urgently. I will then make a statement. http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm200607/cmhansrd/cm070314/text/70314w0005.htm#07031487000143 >> New Asylum Model What are the target percentages for the proportion of asylum cases to be dealt with within six months at specified future dates, under the Home Office's new asylum model. So here it is. The list address is noborders-uk at lists.riseup.net. The web interface url is https://lists.riseup.net/www/info/noborders-uk. This list is CLOSED and MODERATED as it's meant for INTERNAL DISCUSSIONS AND COMMUNICATION. That means only subscribed members can send and view the archives. I've subscribed the emails I got from the Gathering, and that's only 10 people (you should have received a notification by now). If anyone else wants to be subscribed, please email me offlist and I'll do that, but I'd need to know who you are and what you do. Not everyone has to be on it, to be honest, but at least one or more person (liaison) has to be in orders to forward important stuff to their group's list. If anyone would like to HELP MODERATE the list, please let me know. As for the OLD LIST, noii-uk, I've now made a few changes in configuration so that it's more open (anyone can subscribe and view archives etc). People can use this list for announcements and general stuff. I've also requested a new EMAIL ACCOUNT for the network (for others to email us and for us to send emails in an official/collective capacity). The address is noborders-uk at riseup.net. This is to be given to people so that they can write to us. If anyone would like to HELP CHECK IT REGULARLY and let others know if anything comes up, please let me know. Finally, it would be great if we could donate some money to Riseup, the tech collective that's looking after all these lists and emails. -- Shiar From frank.corrigan at frankslist.info Sun Mar 18 09:27:04 2007 From: frank.corrigan at frankslist.info (frankslist.info) Date: Sun, 18 Mar 2007 10:27:04 +0100 Subject: [noborders-brum] New Custom Search Engine Message-ID: <21b997ccfea6a88aa85383b873195053@frontenac.ymlpcom.net> Dear subscriber, RE: New Custom Search Engine New: Search 180+ Newspapers/BBC, just go to: http://www.frankslist.info/search Search over 150 websites on asylum, immigration, conflict and rights, just go to: http://www.frankslist.info/search Thanks Frank Corrigan _____________________________ Change address / Leave mailing list: http://ymlp.com/u.php?frankslist+noborders-brum at lists.aktivix.org Hosting by YourMailingListProvider From frank.corrigan at frankslist.info Mon Mar 19 09:07:05 2007 From: frank.corrigan at frankslist.info (frankslist.info) Date: Mon, 19 Mar 2007 10:07:05 +0100 Subject: [noborders-brum] 'L'ouverture, Nanny, Orwell, Dickens, Sharp, harshest, fashion' - 18 Mar 07 - 45 items (approx) Message-ID: 'L'ouverture, Nanny, Orwell, Dickens, Sharp, harshest, fashion' Sent 19 Mar 07 - 45 items (approx) To get these newsletters direct, just enter your email address at: http://www.frankslist.info the asylum, immigration, conflict and rights information gateway Submit info for free Send News, Jobs and Events to 5000+ subscribers ? http://www.frankslist.info/newsjobsevents Custom Search Engines Search: 150+ websites on asylum, immigration, conflict and rights 180+ UK Newspapers ? http://www.frankslist.info/search ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ 01: UK 02: Jobs 03: World 04: Europe 05: Events 06: Latest RAPAR Newletter 07: New detention in Europe website 08: Parliamentary questions on ESOL pile in 09: Latest news from the Stangers into Citizens campaign 10: Catholic migrants in London - Von Hugel report published 11: How to cancel or change your subscription to www.frankslist.info Lead: 'L'ouverture, Nanny, Orwell, Dickens, Sharp, harshest, fashion' 'Fascism is in fashion' http://www.guardian.co.uk/comment/story/0,,2036087,00.html Fascism's post-modern ally http://www.studentnewspaper.org/?q=node/576 Sinking or swimming in some of the harshest environments in Britain But you can understand why the Home Office was so desperate for it not to get out. http://comment.independent.co.uk/columnists_m_z/deborah_orr/article2366547.ece Slave trade widespread in England http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/6459369.stm My journey in footsteps of anti-slavery heroine Ms Dynamite, who has made a TV film for the anti-slavery law bicentenary, reveals her pride in Jamaica's first freedom fighter Ms Dynamite in Search of Nanny Maroon, to be shown next Sunday at 8pm, marking the bicentenary of the parliamentary act to end the slave trade. http://observer.guardian.co.uk/focus/story/0,,2036632,00.html The Black Jacobins Toussaint L'ouverture And The San Domingo Revolution In 1791, inspired by the ideals of the French Revolution, the slaves of San Domingo rose in revolt. DRC anti-deportation campaign ---------------------------------- Congolese communities all around the country are building up a campaign against future 'charter flights' to DR Congo (http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2007/02/363385.html). There have been successful meetings in Manchester and Coventry. There was a well-attended anti-deportation march through the city of Manchester the other day. Now the campaign is coming to Birmingham. There will be a public meeting on DR Congo deportations on Saturday 24th March 2007 at 4.30pm to 7.30pm - Venue: Ladywood Art Leisure Centre (316 Monument Road, Ladywood, Birmingham, B16 8TR). The campaign is initiated by the Central African Development Action (CADA) in Birmingham and the Congo Support Project, and is supported by the National Coalition of Anti-Deportation Campaigns (NCADC), African Community Connection (COCOA) and Cit? Celeste (French-Speaking Community). It was agreed that Birmingham Noborders would support the campaign and get involved/help out with future actions and protests (there might be one soon at the immigration reporting centre in Solihull). Also we should consider broadening the campaign to include other/all nationalities facing mass deportation campaigns (Iraqis, Afghanis etc.) and build up towards a self-organised refugee campaign like Glasgow's Unity (http://www.unitycentreglasgow.org). 2. Solihull ------------ We kind of reviewed the deceased Solihull pickets and discussed the possibility of starting doing that again. At the moment, however, that seems quite unlikely (especially with so few people attending meetings and doing anything at all!). There was a proposal to do a leaflet about detention and deportation and do a 'leafleting campaign' in Solihull for a week or so (that will sort of cover most of the people signing on). The leaflet will basically be some information and advice for asylum seekers signing on, possibly with a phone number that they can ring before and after going there so that we know when someone gets nicked and try to do something about it. This will obviously be a full-time job, so it probably needs further discussion and coordination with others (ARC, NCADC). 3. Liam Byrne picket --------------------- We have been talking about doing a regular picket at Liam Byrne's surgery for ages, and so have ARC, we hear. Liam Byrne is the Labour MP for Hodge Hill and the honourable immigration minister. Many bad things have been introduced since he became Immigration Minister about a year ago. Phunkee to check out times and other logistics by next meeting. Shiar to draw up a draft leaflet - same deadline. Need also to coordinate with ARC on this. ----------------------------- From frank.corrigan at frankslist.info Wed Mar 21 09:07:04 2007 From: frank.corrigan at frankslist.info (frankslist.info) Date: Wed, 21 Mar 2007 10:07:04 +0100 Subject: [noborders-brum] 'protest, fear, suffering' - 20 Mar 07 - 50 items (approx) Message-ID: 'protest, fear, suffering' 20 Mar 07 - 50 items (approx) To get these newsletters direct, just enter your email address at: http://www.frankslist.info the asylum, immigration, conflict and rights information gateway Submit info for free Send News, Jobs and Events to 5000+ subscribers ? It can be found here: http://www.strangersintocitizens.org.uk/ The web-site emphasises ' earned amnesty' - and champions the 'one off regularisation' of honest hard working migrants as a law and order measure to decrease the 'shadow economy' which acts as a cover for people smugglers, drug traffickers and terrorists . It is also an administrative measure to deal with the backlog of asylum seekers- which I guess might appeal to the government which is wondering what to do with the so called 'legacy" of back-log cases, now that the New Asylum Model is about to come into effect basically their aim is to reassure the "British public' and the government that an amnesty will only be for the deserving (presumably the IND will be the ones who get to decide who this is) and as such, they argue that an amnesty can also serve to make British borders more secure and border controls more effective of course this is nonsense - as most people (though not all) enter Britain legally and then latter become irregular by overstaying, having their asylum claim rejected etc., - so the pool of irregular and otherwise potentially deportable people will just grow again back even if the tighter controls are put in place I've also got a copy of the 5th draft of their strategy paper, from last November, which was written by Austen Ivereigh - a former adviser to Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O?Connor In this document he sets out 5 criteria a British amnesty might include so as to re-assure the 'public' and the state a. five years of continuous residence in Britain (this seems to have gone down to 2 years on the web-site) b. no criminal record (I've been told by a T & G activists that this has now softened to no serious criminal record) c. a track record of employment (which asylum seekers won't have and many irregular workers will find hard to establish) d. positive employer references e. character references from community leaders (think Catholic and other churches here) f. proficiency in English Okay, as I noted in brackets, following feedback from other groups such as the JCWI, the unions, asylum seekers etc. - the Strangers into Citizens seem to relaxed some of the conditions - but what their arguing for is still a very conditional regularisation - however, because there are currently many, many people who desperately want their status in the uk to be normalised - it is quite likely that this initiative will mobilise a lot of asylum seekers and other migrants - COF wants to mobilise people for a few marches as a publicity stunt and as a show of strength - but then the leaders will work the real deal - acceptable to the Home Office and the Sun - behind closed door - a bit like how trade union officials work My own opinion is that NoBorders activists ought to intervene in this process - high-lighting the short comings of this amnesty - but more importantly high- lighting how migrant controls work as labour-force management on a transnational level Migrant labour is crucial in the process of precarisation of the whole work process including that of workers with full residency status / citizenship We need to be advocating for migrants and asylum seekers to organise independently of the church and politicians - and to seek alliances with other people in resistance on both the local and the trans- national levels- not just amongst the great and the (self-defined) good yo - rant over see you on the demos- gregx On 22 Mar 2007, at 13:00, Rebecca wrote: > > yeah, Strangers into Citizens is the campaign of the > Citizens Organising Foundation - encompassing London > Citizens, various different London citizens and > Birmingham Citizens - http://www.cof.org.uk/ > > yet here they don't seem to mention their campaign! > > > > --- noborders-glasgow wrote: > >> _____ >> >> From: Emma Ginn >> [mailto:ncadc-north-west at ncadc.org.uk] >> Sent: 19 March 2007 09:33 >> To: Recipient List Suppressed: >> Subject: Mass for Migrant Workers + Strangers into >> Citizens March >> >> >> >> =========== >> >> NCADC News Service >> >> =========== >> >> >> >> For a Pathway to Legal status for Vulnerable >> Migrants >> >> >> >> >> >> >> >> The Birmingham Citizens Assembly >> >> Tuesday 20 March - 7.30pm to 9.15pm >> >> Great Hall of Birmingham University >> >> >> >> This will be an 800-strong gathering in support of >> Strangers into Citizens. >> Among the many exciting events at that Assembly will >> be the first showing of >> the campaign DVD, a compelling five-minute insight >> into the world of illegal >> immigrants. He was arrested without warning. This was no coincidence. Alphonsus was a leading member of Liverpool Asylum Voice/Voice of the Undocumented. He was also due to speak at the conference against immigration controls being held for trade unionists by No One Is Illegal in Liverpool on March 31st. An unprecedented show of trade union solidarity managed to get Alphonsus out of detention so he will now speak on March 31st. This was lead by the General Secretaries of 5 major unions ? University and College Union, National Union of Journalists, Transport and General Workers Union, Rail Maritime and Transport Union and the Public and Commercial Services Union. Now exactly the same has happened again to another member of Asylum Voice/Voice of the Undocumented and intended participant at the March 31 event. Jannatul Chowdhury and her children are refugees from Bangladesh ? following the political kidnap of the children. Since both parents arrived here with the children the father has had a heart attack and died. He is buried in Liverpool. Ironically Jannatul helps as a volunteer in teaching of ESOL (English language) ? a course from which asylum seekers and migrants workers nationally are to be excluded from attending. At dawn on March 27th the entire family were arrested without warning and imprisoned in Yarl?s Wood Detention Centre. This can only be regarded as Home Office retaliation for the release of Alphonsus. Since the arrest the students and staff at Childwell Sports College (which the children attend) have demonstrated in front of the Home Office in Liverpool. If you want to be subscribed, please email me offlist and I'll do that (but i need to know who you are and which group you're involved with). Also, it would be nice if people got non-commercial email accounts (i.e. not @hotmail, yahoo, gmx etc.). After all, they're evil, not secure and everything. There are many sound email providers around: riseup.net, aktivix.org, to mention only a few. Cheers, -- Shiar
