Majid picked up the publicity for the sleep-out on the Indymedia website and came up from London especially to film the vigil and sleep-out. I think he did an excellent job of making the video, and the political points were well made. For those of you who couldn't join us that night, you can see a bit of what you missed in both reports. The quality was good but the general turnout from supporters was pretty poor compared with last year. This year about 50 max during the evening and just 9 sleeping out. Last year about 150 during the evening and 25 sleeping out. Not a criticism, just an observation. ARC would very much like to find out why the turnout was down to help us make improvements for next year. One reason may be the fact that Refugee Week started the very next morning whereas previous years have had the sleep-out starting well clear of the start of Refugee Week. So, how about sharing what you think? You can use ARCwm groups to reply to this message or post a message or question of your own. Hope to hear from you soon Bob Kirk Original Message ----- From: majid at friction.tv To: jobob1 at tiscali.co.uk Sent: Monday, June 16, 2008 11:06 PM Subject: Friction TV video of your protest Hello, this is Majid the cameraman that was filming your sleep out demonstration for Friction TV. A handful of local activists braved the morning showers and went down to the venue, the four-star hotel of Marriott in Five Ways, to unwelcome the dodgy organisation. Armed with a banner that read "International Organisation Against Migrants" and leaflets exposing "the truth about IOM", they confronted attendees as they walked in and offered them a dose of truth to help them digest the lies they would later get in their welcome packs and the marketing-style presentations. The IOM staff, however, were highly diplomatic (or confused) and did not call the police or try to kick them out. The IOM Communications Director even invited them to go in and "raise their questions inside", as some invitees did not apparently turn up and some seats were left embarrassingly empty. One of the protesters later commented: "This is the funniest action I've ever done!" http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/regions/birmingham/2008/06/401910.html (pictures inside) --- Shiar
