hello all. sorry for another long email, but please read if you can.

i would sort out the mechanism and security of the list (as far as i
know how to do that) if i only knew what it means "as long as everyone's
concerns are met"... i am kinda waiting for some sort of
discussion/decision making to occur with regard to the three main points
that need sorting out and which i raised in my last mail..

so far there has not at all been agreement on how to set up subscription
and archives..

again, at the moment anyone can subscribe, and our archives are public.

1. i think subscription might usefully be moderated (i.e. that if
someone wants to subscribe they are asked to wait until a moderator
approves), but that means that there really have to be a few people who
will regularly check the admin pages for pending subscription requests
(probably moderators will be notified by email when a request arrives,
but we cannot be sure?). this is different from just anyone being
administrator for symbolic/structural reasons. some people have to *take
on* that responsibility.

relatedly, we will at some point have to discuss which criteria have to
be met by future list-members (do they have to be known, do they have to
explain what they want etc?)

2. i believe the archives should remain public. ian's point that people
who are interested in subscribing might want to check out what kind of
discussion goes on is an important one, another one is freedom of
information.

what arguments are there in favour of having private archives?

3. who wants to take on administrator/moderator roles? apart from steve,
nobody has so far asked me for the password to check out the admin
pages, so i assume not THAT many people are interested in it after all?

i'd actually prefer to NOT have any admin role, but can remain a support
if not many others are interested.

regarding giving people a run down. i had no run down. i got a password,
i logged in, i checked out the pages. it's all pretty straightforward
apart from some terminology that i don't get either. the pages are like
a set of forms with boxes to tick. so they give you the option: archives
private or public? and then you tick. if you don't understand some of
the options, there is an explanatory link for all (or at least most) of
them.

PLEASE those of you who'd be happy to play geeks, let me know and i send
you the password and you can check the site out and you can enter your
name in the box for administrators on the first page ('general options'i
think the page called), if you like.

and the rest, please make your opinions known on the subscription and
archive issues.

cheers
nina
