<font size=4 color="#808080"><b>When Russian </font><font size=4>psychiatrist</font><font size=4 color="#808080"> Olga Kharitidi journeyed into the Altai region of </font><font size=4>Siberia</font><font size=4 color="#808080"> she had no idea of how fundamentally it would change her life. But her encounter with one of the oldest </font><font size=4>shamanic</font><font size=4 color="#808080"> traditions in the world transformed her from a Cartesian sceptic to a passionate advocate of the way of the </font><font size=4>shaman</font><font size=4 color="#808080">, a path she’s been walking ever since. This is an extract from her book, ‘</font><font size=4>Entering The Circle’</font><font size=4 color="#808080">. <br><br>
</i></font><font color="#FF6600">The word </font><font color="#008000">shaman</font><font color="#FF6600"> was first used by Russian travellers in the 17th century, when they wrote their report on their journeys, and they used the word </font><font color="#008000">shaman</font><font color="#FF6600"> as it was used by some </font><font color="#008000">Siberian</font><font color="#FF6600"> tribes.</font><font color="#008000"> <br><br>
Shamans</font><font color="#FF6600"> in </font><font color="#008000">Siberia</font><font color="#FF6600"> are like social workers, they are very much the product of a tribal society. </font><font color="#008000">Shamans</font><font color="#FF6600"> not only possess some magical or spiritual qualities, they are <u>working for the community</u>. This social foundation is very important, and </font><font color="#008000">'shaman'</font><font color="#FF6600"> describes this dual magical/social role.<br><br>
What I experienced was a process of </font><font color="#008000">Initiation</font><font color="#FF6600"> because I experienced a lot of physical stress and physical transformation at that time. It was almost like a </font><font color="#008000">psychotic state</font><font color="#FF6600">, like the states some of my patients experience in their </font><font color="#008000">visions</font><font color="#FF6600"> and </font><font color="#008000">hallucinations</font><font color="#FF6600">. So it is in my <i>memory</i>, in my <i>self</i>, in my <i>body</i>, and I have been using it in my attempts to help other people. I have since worked with emergency psychiatric patients, helping change this balance, </font><font color="#008000">this fine line between death and life</font><font color="#FF6600">. I have also done a lot of work, not all positive, on myself and with people who were dead and who were still trying to cross this boundary, this fine line.<br><br>
</font><font size=5 color="#008000">Time</font><font size=5 color="#FF6600">,</font><font color="#FF6600"> as the </font><font color="#008000">shamans</font><font color="#FF6600"> understand it, is very deeply connected with my whole belief and the way I live my life now after having experienced the Altai and central Asian traditions.<br><br>
I believe that our concept of </font><font color="#008000">Time</font><font color="#FF6600"> is changing in a way that could help us integrate </font><font color="#008000">ancient knowledge</font><font color="#FF6600"> with a new </font><font color="#008000">scientific paradigm</font><font color="#FF6600">. On the one hand we see that we have this </font><font color="#008000">ancient knowledge</font><font color="#FF6600"> and yet, on the other, we have </font><font color="#008000">modern medicine</font><font color="#FF6600"> and </font><font color="#008000">modern science</font><font color="#FF6600"> and they are quite separate. These days people are trying to bring them together using </font><font color="#008000">alternative medicine</font><font color="#FF6600">, </font><font color="#008000">alternative therapies</font><font color="#FF6600"> and so on.<br><br>
I believe that </font><font color="#008000">Time</font><font color="#FF6600"> can serve this integration. </font><font color="#008000">Time</font><font color="#FF6600"> is still not scientifically understood as a phenomenon, even though you can't conduct a single scientific experiment, and not a single scientific methodology can exist, outside of </font><font color="#008000">Time</font><font color="#FF6600">. <br><br>
When I first came across the idea of </font><font size=4 color="#FF6600">different </font><font size=4 color="#008000">time spirals</font><font color="#FF6600">, I found that in Central Asia </font><font color="#008000">Time</font><font color="#FF6600"> was related to their god </font><font color="#008000">Zurvan</font><font color="#FF6600">, an ancient person or entity who was even incorporated into </font><font color="#008000">Zoroastrian</font><font color="#FF6600"> cosmology. </font><font color="#008000">Zurvan</font><font color="#FF6600"> is the god of </font><font color="#008000">Individuality</font><font color="#FF6600">, the god of </font><font color="#008000">Time</font><font color="#FF6600"> and the god of </font><font color="#008000">Death</font><font color="#FF6600">, the god of </font><font color="#008000">Personification</font><font color="#FF6600">. One of the ways he was depicted was as a human figure with two faces. One face is our normal face and the other is in the place of our heart. For me this is a very literal manifestation of the whole </font><font color="#008000">time</font><font color="#FF6600"> process and our own individual evolution inside this process.<br><br>
I believe that what we are doing in our lives is developing this personality, developing this self-system, but the meta-goal for our spiritual development is to come into the realisation of a different self, which I call the ontological self, and which is located in the place of our hearts. All the traditions talk about this, whether it is </font><font color="#008000">Russian Orthodox</font><font color="#FF6600">, esoteric </font><font color="#008000">Christianity</font><font color="#FF6600">, the </font><font color="#008000">Iranian</font><font color="#FF6600"> tradition or the </font><font color="#008000">Sufi</font><font color="#FF6600"> tradition. They all talk about this </font><font size=4 color="#008000">Internal Man</font><font color="#FF6600">, this </font><font color="#008000">Celestial Being</font><font color="#FF6600"> that lives in our hearts and which is <u>asleep in normal circumstances</u>. <br><br>
But we can develop ourselves in such a way that we come into integration with this entity. This is the door to </font><font size=4 color="#008000">immortality</font><font color="#FF6600">, into managing our own </font><font color="#008000">Personal Time</font><font color="#FF6600">. I have done a lot of work trying to relate these concepts of time to our neurophysiological functions.<br><br>
I found that </font><font color="#008000">Time</font><font color="#FF6600"> flow, this god of time in our personal existence, is being connected with the functional asymmetry of our </font><font color="#008000">hemispheres</font><font color="#FF6600">. Our </font><font color="#008000">right hemisphere</font><font color="#FF6600"> is connected with our </font><font color="#008000">Past</font><font color="#FF6600"> and our left hemisphere is connected with our </font><font color="#008000">Future</font><font color="#FF6600">. <br><br>
This asymmetry changes at different ages, different stages of our life, as has been strongly proved by clinical research. If we know how to explore it using particular techniques, then we can start </font><font size=4 color="#008000">managing our Personal Time <u>and really do time travel</u>.<br>
