Many thanks to everyone who made last Saturday's <big>World Against War</big> demonstration in London such a success.
More than one hundred coaches brought demonstrators from all over the country. <big>Trafalgar Square</big> was all but full
and with people joining the demonstration en route we estimate around <big>40,000 attended.</big>
This was in excess of what we'd been expecting. The sight of the front of the march crossing <big>Lambeth bridge </big>
while the middle was still on <big>Westminster bridge</big> was inspiring. Hundreds of the marchers carried flowers and other items to lay at the <big>Nelson Mandela</big> statue in Parliament Square
to remember all those who have died over the past six years as a result of the <big>"war on terror".</big>
The Scottish Stop the War Coalition also held a very successful demonstration
in <big>Glasgow</big>, with more than </small><span
style="font-weight: bold;">5,000 attending</span>.</pre>

right down, here’s how it worked: The Grinning Family, with US average
household income, gets a $200,000 mortgage at 4% for two years.
Their $955 monthly payment is 25% of their income. No
problem. Their banker promises them a new mortgage, again at the
cheap rate, in 2 years. <br>

years later, the promise ain’t worth a can of spam</big> and the
Grinnings are told to scram - because their house is now worth less
than the mortgage. Now, the mortgage hits 9% or $1,609 plus fees
to recover the “discount” they had for two years. Suddenly,
payments equal 42% to 50% of pre-tax income. The Grinnings move
into their Toyota.</span><br

of regulating the banks that had run amok, Bush’s regulators went on
the warpath against Spitzer and states attempting to stop predatory
practices. Making an unprecedented use of the legal power of “<span

pre-emption,”</span> Bush-bots ordered the states to NOT enforce their
consumer protection laws.</span><br

Bush’s banking buddies were especially steamed that Spitzer hammered
bank practices across the nation using New York State laws.</span><br

Others joined the sharkfest: <span style="font-style: italic;">Goldman
Sachs, Merrill Lynch</span> and <span style="font-style: italic;">Citigroup’s

their major profit centres. They did this through a bit of
financial legerdemain called <span

that means is that they took a bunch of junk mortgages, like the
Grinning’s, loans about to go down the toilet and re-packaged them into
“tranches” of bonds which were stamped “AAA” - top grade - by bond
rating agencies. These gold-painted turds were sold as sparkling
safe investments to US school district pension funds and town
governments in Finland (really).<br>

dollars – he pulled in from 1998 through 2007.</span><br

ago, state attorneys general and others involved in <span

began to notice a marked increase in a range of predatory lending
practices by mortgage lenders. Some were misrepresenting the
terms of
loans, making loans without regard to consumers' ability to repay,
making loans with <span
style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(255, 0, 0);">deceptive "teaser"
rates that later ballooned astronomically</span>, packing loans with <span
style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(255, 0, 0);">undisclosed charges
and fees</span>, or even <span
style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(255, 0, 0);">paying illegal
kickbacks</span>.
These and other practices, we noticed, were having a devastating effect
on home buyers. In addition, the widespread nature of these
practices,
if left unchecked, <span
style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(255, 0, 0); text-decoration: underline;">threatened
our financial markets</span>.</span><br

predatory lending was becoming a national problem, the Bush
administration looked the other way and did nothing to protect American
homeowners. In fact, the government chose instead to align itself
with
the banks that were victimizing consumers.</span><br

was widely understood to present a looming national crisis. This
threat was so clear that as New York attorney general, I joined with
colleagues in the other 49 states in attempting to fill the void left
by the federal government. Individually, and together, state
attorneys
general of <span style="font-style: italic;">both </span>parties
brought litigation or entered into settlements with many subprime
lenders that were engaged in predatory lending practices. Several
state legislatures, including New York's, enacted laws aimed at <span
style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(255, 0, 0);">curbing such
practices.</span></span><br

Bush administration do in response? Did it reverse course and
decide
to take action to halt this burgeoning scourge? As Americans are

painfully aware, with hundreds of thousands of homeowners facing
foreclosure and our markets reeling, <span

resounding no.</span></span><br

the Bush administration do <span style="font-style: italic;">nothing </span>to
protect consumers, it embarked on an aggressive and unprecedented
campaign to <big
style="text-decoration: underline; color: rgb(255, 0, 0);"><span
style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;">prevent </span></big>states
from protecting their residents from the problems to which the federal
government was turning a blind eye.</span><br
style="font-family: Times New Roman,Times,serif;">
<br style="font-family: Times New Roman,Times,serif;">
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman,Times,serif;">Let me explain:
The administration accomplished this feat through an obscure federal
agency called the <span
style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(255, 0, 0);">Office of the
Comptroller of the Currency (OCC)</span>. The <span
style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(255, 0, 0);">OCC </span>has
been in existence since the Civil War. Its mission is to ensure
the
fiscal soundness of national banks. For 140 years, the <span
style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(255, 0, 0);">OCC </span>examined
the books of national banks to make sure they were balanced, an
important but uncontroversial function. But a few years ago, for
the
first time in its history, the OCC was used as a tool <span
style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;">against </span>consumers.</span><br
style="font-family: Times New Roman,Times,serif;">
<br style="font-family: Times New Roman,Times,serif;">
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman,Times,serif;">In 2003, during
the height of the predatory lending crisis, the <span
style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(255, 0, 0);">OCC </span>invoked
a clause from the 1863 National Bank Act to issue formal opinions
preempting all state predatory lending laws, thereby rendering them <span
style="font-style: italic;">inoperative</span>. The <span
style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(255, 0, 0);">OCC </span>also
promulgated new rules that <span
style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold; text-decoration: underline;">prevented
</span>states from enforcing any of their <span
style="font-style: italic;">own </span>consumer
protection laws against national banks. The federal government's
actions were so egregious and so unprecedented that all 50 state
attorneys general, and all 50 state banking superintendents, actively
fought the new rules.</span><br
style="font-family: Times New Roman,Times,serif;">
<br style="font-family: Times New Roman,Times,serif;">
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman,Times,serif;">But the
unanimous opposition of the 50 states did not deter, or even slow, the
Bush administration in its goal of protecting the banks. In fact,
when
my office opened an investigation of possible discrimination in
mortgage lending by a number of banks, the <span
style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(255, 0, 0);">OCC </span>filed a
federal lawsuit to stop the investigation.</span><br
style="font-family: Times New Roman,Times,serif;">
<br style="font-family: Times New Roman,Times,serif;">
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman,Times,serif;">Throughout our
battles with the <span
style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(255, 0, 0);">OCC </span>and
the banks, the mantra of the banks and their defenders was that efforts
to curb predatory lending would deny access to credit to the very
consumers the states were trying to <span style="font-style: italic;">protect</span>.
But the curbs we sought on predatory and unfair lending would have in
no way jeopardized access to the legitimate credit market for
appropriately priced loans. Instead, they would have stopped the
scourge of predatory lending practices that have resulted in countless
thousands of consumers losing their homes and put our economy in a
precarious position.</span><br
style="font-family: Times New Roman,Times,serif;">
<br style="font-family: Times New Roman,Times,serif;">
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman,Times,serif;">When history
tells the story of the subprime lending crisis and recounts <span
style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(255, 0, 0);">its devastating
effects on the lives of so many innocent homeowners</span>,
the Bush administration will not be judged favorably. The tale is
still unfolding, but when the dust settles, it will be judged as a
willing accomplice to the lenders who went to any lengths in their
quest for profits. So willing, in fact, that it used the power of
the
federal government in an unprecedented assault on state legislatures,
as well as on state attorneys general and anyone else on the side of

Since perceptions shape behavior and gene activity, cultural beliefs

traits of
cells are derived from over 150,000 different protein building blocks
whose structures are programmed in our genes. One of biology’s
most
hallowed beliefs, codified as the <span
style="color: rgb(51, 102, 255);">Central Dogma</span>, stipulates
that
information in biology flows in only one direction: from DNA to RNA to
protein. Consequently, the <span style="color: rgb(51, 102, 255);">Central
Dogma</span> provides for
the notion of
</span><span style="color: rgb(51, 204, 0);"><span
style="color: rgb(51, 102, 255); font-family: Arial Black;">genetic
determinism</span></span><span
style="color: rgb(51, 204, 0); font-weight: bold;">, the belief that
genes “<span style="font-style: italic;">control</span>” the character

life. Textbooks and mass media are still informing the public
that
genes control their lives, regardless of the fact that most biologists
are now aware that this simplified assumption is <big><span

the 1970’s and 80’s, as a tenured faculty member of the University of
Wisconsin’s School of Medicine, I was primarily concerned with research
on muscular
dystrophy employing cultures of cloned stem cells. Cloned cells
are
created by inoculating a single stem cell into a culture dish and
allowing it to divide many times, producing thousands of <span
style="color: rgb(51, 102, 255);">genetically
identical cells</span>.</span><small><br
style="color: rgb(51, 204, 0); font-weight: bold;">
<br style="color: rgb(51, 204, 0); font-weight: bold;">

my
surprise, </big></big>I found that by changing some of the components
in my tissue
culture dishes or by changing the composition of the incubator’s

profoundly alter the fate of my cultured
cells</big>. For example, I would split my stem cell culture into
3 tissue culture dishes, each exposed to different environmental
conditions. In one dish the cells formed <span
style="color: rgb(51, 102, 255);">muscle</span>, in another they
formed
<span style="color: rgb(51, 102, 255);">bone </span>and the remaining
dish the cells formed <span style="color: rgb(51, 102, 255);">fat</span>
(adipose). Since my
cultures were seeded with <span
style="color: rgb(51, 102, 255); text-decoration: underline;">genetically
identical stem cells,</span> it was clear
that the differentiated fate of the cell was under the control of the
culture environment and </span><span style="color: rgb(51, 204, 0);"><big
style="text-decoration: underline; font-family: Arial Black;">NOT the
genes</big></span><span

These studies, demonstrating that cells
were not “controlled” by genes, emphasised the power of <big><span
style="color: rgb(51, 102, 255);">nurture </span></big>over
nature in influencing our lives.</span><small><br

textbooks and
mass media <span style="font-style: italic;">still </span>refer to
the gene-containing nucleus as the cell’s
brain, twenty
years ago I had recognised that the nucleus was <span
style="font-style: italic;">not </span>the brain, it was
functionally equivalent to the cell’s gonads, strictly involved with
cell reproduction. Additionally, experiments in which the cell’s
nucleus is removed, showed that cells can live and express complex
behaviours for two or more months without having any genes.</span><small><br
style="color: rgb(51, 204, 0); font-weight: bold;">

<span style="color: rgb(51, 204, 0); font-weight: bold;">I
refocused my research to
identify the mechanisms by which environmental information controlled
behaviour and genetics. Eventually my quest revealed that the
cell’s “<span style="color: rgb(51, 102, 255);">skin</span>”
(the cell membrane) was responsible for reading and responding to
environmental conditions. <span style="color: rgb(51, 102, 255);">“Switches”
</span>in the membrane were comprised of
protein receptors, the cell’s equivalents of eyes, ears and nose, that
r<span style="text-decoration: underline;">ead environmental signals</span>,
and protein effectors that activated cell
functions or the reading of genes. Membrane “switches” enable
cells to
dynamically adapt their genes and behaviour to conform to environmental
demands.</span><small><br

<span style="color: rgb(51, 204, 0); font-weight: bold;">Membrane
“switches” are molecular units of perception used in regulating the
cell’s biology. The membrane, more accurately, the “<span
style="color: rgb(51, 102, 255);">mem-Brain</span>,”
represents the cell’s equivalent of a brain. Understanding
membrane
structure and function would be key to understanding the nature of
life. In 1985, I was reviewing the molecular architecture and
behaviour
of the cell membrane as an environmental information processor.
In
outline form, I jotted down a series of descriptive phrases using terms
I’d hadn’t used before. I sat back and reviewed what I had just
written: <span style="font-style: italic; color: rgb(51, 102, 255);">“The
cell membrane is a liquid crystal, semiconductor with
gates and channels.”</span></span><small><br
style="color: rgb(51, 204, 0); font-weight: bold;">

<span style="color: rgb(51, 204, 0); font-weight: bold;">As a
cellular biologist, I’d never used these particular phrases, yet they
sounded very familiar. Where had I heard them? On the
corner of my
desk, I noticed my first computer, a smiley-faced Macintosh, and next
to it a book I'd been reading entitled <span
style="font-style: italic;">Understanding Your
Microprocessor</span>. On page 3 in the book’s Introduction, was
the
definition of a computer chip, “<span
style="font-style: italic; color: rgb(51, 102, 255);">…a crystal
semiconductor with gates and
channels.”!!</span></span><small><br
style="color: rgb(51, 204, 0); font-weight: bold;">
<br style="color: rgb(51, 204, 0); font-weight: bold;">

<span style="color: rgb(51, 204, 0); font-weight: bold;"><big><big>I
froze.</big></big>
The next sequence of thoughts happened probably in milliseconds - but
to
me, it seemed like hours. First I thought, <span
style="font-style: italic; color: rgb(51, 102, 255);">“What a
coincidence… a cell
membrane and a computer chip share the same definition!”</span>
Then a few
more hour-long milliseconds lapsed and it hit me, <span
style="font-style: italic; color: rgb(51, 102, 255);">“This was not a
simple coincidence! The molecular architecture and behaviour of a
computer chip is essentially identical to a cell membrane!”</span>
The
membrane is not <span style="font-style: italic;">analogous </span>to
a chip; the membrane is homologous to a
chip. Meaning, the membrane is not “like a chip,” <big
style="text-decoration: underline;"><big>the membrane IS a
chip.</big></big></span><big style="text-decoration: underline;"><br
style="color: rgb(51, 204, 0); font-weight: bold;">

</small><span style="color: rgb(51, 204, 0); font-weight: bold;">The
cell
membrane is a carbon-based, molecular equivalent of a silicon-based
computer chip. Every cell is a programmable chip, with <span
style="color: rgb(51, 102, 255);">a hard drive
(the nucleus)</span> containing <span style="color: rgb(51, 102, 255);">software
(genes)</span>. As with conventional silicon
based computers, cellular data is entered via a keyboard - comprised of
thousands of different membrane protein receptors keyed to different
environmental signals. Ambient environmental signals are
converted into
cell behaviour by the membrane’s effector proteins.</span><small><br

ten years ago, the new science of <big><span

describe the
molecular mechanisms by which environmental signals dynamically control
the activity of genes. Most importantly, epigenetic mechanisms
can
generate over <big><span style="color: rgb(51, 102, 255);">30,000
different protein variations</span><span
style="color: rgb(51, 102, 255);"> from each gene
blueprint!</span></big> In contrast to the belief that genes are
hardwired programs,
epigenetics reveal that gene programs are rewritable enabling cells to
adapt to dynamic environments. Epigenetic science demonstrates

cell’s nucleus is a read-write hard disk, wherein gene software is

cells respond to environmental clues, why are we not human “clones”
since we are exposed to the same environment? The answer, no two
people
are biologically the same; your body would reject a tissue or organ
graft from anyone else by recognising the foreign cells as not being

an individual’s identity to be found? The cells in each body have
a
unique set of membrane proteins on their outer surface. Medicine
identifies a subset of the these receptors as self-receptors,
literally, “receivers of self.” When self-receptors are removed
from a
cell it becomes a generic cell, transplantable into anyone without
being rejected. Transferring one person’s set of self-receptors
on to
another’s cell would also transfer <span
style="color: rgb(51, 102, 255);">“ownership” </span>of that cell.</span><small><br

does our identity come from? Apparently, it is a unique “signal”

the field read by our self-receptors. Importantly, this
communication
is a two-way street; signals are not just coming into the cells, since
our experiential awareness is sent back out to the field and changes
the source! The invisible moving forces described by quantum
biophysics
that activate the self-receptors are the same invisible moving forces
acknowledged as spirit.</span><small><br
