*welcome to the 1st of the twice monthly ROU DIGESTED!*
*
*
*Strike/Occupy/Transform...Strike!*
On Thurs March 24th Members of UCU at colleges and universities across the
UK, and here in Leeds, will be on strike in a row over changes to pension
schemes, jobs losses and pay cuts. In Leeds there will also be a local
dispute on Tues 22nd. Download posters from our website, join campaigns
across Facebook, agitate in your schools and workplaces...and join staff on
the picket lines.

*Strike/Occupy/Transform...Occupy!*
On Sat 26th March we’ll be occupying (at least) the streets of London. It’s
the big TUC demo, but there are numerous feeder marches and extra-curricular
activities on that day. Worth noting may be the students starting from ULU,
Mallet Street, at 11am. There’s rumour of breakfast for those who can get
there for 10am... http://studentassembly.org.uk/
And the UKuncut occupations of Oxford Street: http://www.ukuncut.org.uk/
*Strike/Occupy/Transform....Transform!*
The next concept meeting will be on the 30th March and will look at how
class is created in modern capitalism. We will look at precarity as the
basis for a new class composition. Keep watching the website for details!

And if you can’t make that, some ROU folk will be around and attending key
events (especially on 19th and 29th) at the Temporary Arts Space happening
in the Light from 16th to 31st March. A host of interesting discussions, if
you’re on Facebook check out* **

And if you’re down London early, you may want to feast your brains on a
Precarity People’s Trial, a free event at the ICA. See
www.precariousworkersbrigarde.tumbr.com for more details.
*Latest on website* –
If you haven’t looked at our website lately, there’s some insightful new
articles you may want to check out. Latest up are “Where next for Art in
Manchester?” from Manchester Mule, and a no holds barred report “On the
Occupation at the Uni of Wisconsin Milwaukee, Warts and All”. There’s also a
‘Global Protest Map Time-Lapse Video” marking the major uprisings from Dec
18 to Mar 7. And the highly popular article from our friends at The Paper:
‘What Academics Do When They Protest’.

*Latest locally:*
In case you were thinking these cuts are just the evil necessaries of a cash
strapped society, it’s worth checking out the latest revelations into ROU’s
best friend Michael Arthur. He’s had a mere £42,000 in expenses over the
past 3 years, on top of his annual salary of £253,000 and a rent free flat
to top him up. He even likes to claim £3.50 for his train snacks. This bill
is picked up by Leeds University Finances and partly funded by student
tuition fees.
Luckily for Michael Arthur, he’ll be able to upgrade his train snacks and
his 5 * hotels and restaurants, because tuition fees will be rising to
£9,000 from 2012. Check www.leedstudent.org for more on this.
