Reading Grassroots Action - updates rga-u at lists.aktivix.org
Sun Jul 26 11:18:55 BST 2009

Greetings and welcome to the July 2009 update for Reading
Grassroots Action. If you are reading this for the first time you can
find more about us at our website www.rgacollective.org.uk.

We have had a busy summer so far and there is more to follow.

On
3rd June Reading IWW union branch held a meeting entitled Left of
Reading, a chance for trade unionists, environmentalists and other
progressive and left-wing people to come together and discuss current
activity and plans for the future. The meeting was well-attended with
representatives of several local organisations, and focused on
workplace struggles and union activity. The next Left of Reading
meeting is planned to take place mid-August, date and venue TBC.

One
result of the Left of Reading meeting was the creation of an e-mail
list. The list may be subscribed to by sending a blank e-mail to
left-of-reading-subscribe at googlegroups.com or via the Google Groups
website: http://groups.google.com/group/left-of-reading/

In part
as a product of this coming together of a range of people and groups on
the left, 30th July will see a meeting of the National Shop Stewards
network (NSSN - see http://www.shopsteward.net for details) with the
aim of launching a local shop stewards network for Reading. The NSSN
connects trade unionists and working class militants directly to help
organise effective solidarity and share experience and knowledge to
help further class struggle.

RGA has also recently completed
analysing the results of our community consultation carried out in the
Katesgrove area. The results showed areas of concern for local
residents and proposals to deal with them, and will be made available
on the RGA website soon. RGA members are still pursuing the creation of
a community garden in Katesgrove, resulting from our two year 'Common
Ground Community Garden' land occupation in Silver Street.

Most
recently, RGA is supporting the community campaign against the closure
of the Jolly Angler, a pub in Newtown which was abruptly closed in June
and sold. For more information please see this report: http://www.rgacollective.org.uk/?q=node/423 or the campaign website listed below.
