[ShareTompkins] non-dial-up, non-time-warner-affiliated cable internet?

Can anyone recommend an ISP not affiliated with Time-Warner, and not a
dial-up? I'll be moving to my own little house at the end of July, and
it looks as though I'm about to be cured of my internet habit, cold
turkey...
I supposed I still need to work on picking my battles; however, ... I
just canceled my contract with Earthlink before it even got started...
Someone from Time-Warner called to schedule an installation date for
Earthlink highspeed cable internet at my new house. We got as far as
their request for my social security number. The whole number. Not
just the last four.
Somehow when I wasn't looking, it became customary for big corporations
to access one's credit record -- not just credit card companies and
banks, but now telecommunications companies. It's no longer enough for
a company to have one's credit card number as guarantee that one *will*
pay one's bills. Likewise, it wasn't enough for Earthlink -- when I
called to complain (I think India answered) -- that I was a customer of
theirs for years, starting back in the 90's -- the best they could do
without my social security number was to offer me dial up or satellite,
the one which is too slow, the other, too expensive.
Personally, I think this national identification number thing has gone
far enough; and I just wish people would start getting their dander up
everytime their social security numbers are requested by entities that
really don't need to know...
End of rant.
