>> Jim Murphy, MAT is a veteran of the Vietnam War who recently moved to Ithaca from New York City, where he dedicated his life to being a high school teacher and Dean. He signed up for the war to avoid the draft. Murphy helped to write a law, passed five years ago by the NYS government, that allows members of the National Guard to seek payment for medical needs associated with exposure to depleted uranium. He is the organizer of the Ithaca Veterans’ Peace Council.

>> This presentation will address the fact that PTSD/TBI, Addiction and Suicide frequently co-occur in various combinations;  all place service members in jeopardy for self-harm as well as harm to others.  No matter where a service member comes for help, we need to know how to assess for all four conditions, where to refer service members for care of conditions that are out of our scope of treatment, and how to promote effective case management so that service members can recover as quickly as possible.
>> Helena Davis, M.A., LMHC is Director of Training and Special Projects for the Mental Health Association in New York State (MHANYS). Helena is a seasoned clinician, trainer and curriculum designer who specializes in trauma related issues, co-occurring disorders, and parents with psychiatric disabilities. For the last six years, Helena has traveled around NYS delivering training to civilian mental health providers about the needs of returning service members and their families. Helena has maintained a part time private practice since 1990 where she has specializes in working with people who have Post-traumatic Stress Disorder or Dissociative Identity Disorder. Nationally, Helena has received national recognition from Mental Health America, National Council on Trauma-Informed Care, and the National Association of Uniform Services Social Workers, and the U.S. Army.
