This sounds like the potential makings of cooperative ownership. Didn't
somebody just do that with the bookstore? I've heard it's a great way to run
a business.

Here's a link with a video clip of a local Democracy at Work Network
representative talking about worker cooperatives.

ools-for-building-equity-in-a-sustainable-economy/

Good luck. I love Ludgates!

You would need to talk to Katie and Dave about the details, of course, but
my understanding is that in addition to balance sheet problems at Ludgate's,
new regulations will require a lot of upgrades to equipment, amounting to
many, many thousands of dollars of investment.

Hi Everyone,

I've just heard the sad news that Ludgate's, a wonderful locally-owned
grocer, is closing down!

Having recently moved from downtown to Hanshaw Road, within biking distance
to the store, we have come to treasure this shop for its wonderful
selection, friendly staff and general awesomeness. So I'm wondering if there
is a scenario in which the store could be saved by becoming a cooperative,
similar to what the community was able to do for Buffalo Street Books not
that long ago.

Perhaps it is too late in the game to suggest such a strategy, but me and my
partner Ari would definitely be able to invest a couple hundred dollars to
save a wonderful place that fills an important niche in the economy by
providing lots of healthy, organic and vegan food options to folks who live
up on the hill.

What do others think?

- Shira :)

     *Subject: **Closing Ludgate's*
            Dear friends,
As many of you know, after a difficult year struggling with
     sales at the
store, we have made the decision to close Ludgate's. It's with
     a heavy
heart that we will be shutting down this unique locally owned
     independent
business, a store I cared deeply for. Simply put, it hasn't
     been in the
black for a number of years now -- and we can no longer sustain it.
So I'm writing to ask you for your support in getting the word
     out that we
will be open to sell off the remaining inventory, the store
     equipment and
holiday trees, etc for the next few weeks. *Store hours **for this
shutting down period **start Tues, Nov 29: Noon-7pm.*
We are selling 10 different varieties of cut trees grown without
fertilizers or pesticides from a tree farmer in Caroline, giant
     poinsettias
from a regional nursery (Waterville, near where lived before we
     came to
Ithaca) and locally produced wreaths. We even have 5 live trees
     (spruces)
that you can transplant after the holidays.
We also need to sell as much of our remaining inventory as
     possible. We
have many dry goods (beans, grains, dried fruit, nuts, spices,
     tea, coffee)
remaining. Beautiful stoneware crocks & bowls, Weck canning
     jars and
cheesemaking supplies. Also, lots of jars of Scandinavian pickled
     herring! And...chocolate.
If you can pass the word along to listservs you belong to or
     mention it to
people you meet, it would be a great help to us.
            Thanks,
            Kate
PS: I will be putting in a final bulk order, if you care to
     stock up on
     anything. Here's the website
