Songs and Poems to Honor the Earth
Tuesday, April 17, 6-8 pm
Buffalo Street Books
Poetry can often express what our hearts want to say better than trumpets.
The Center for Environmental Sustainability (CES) invites all ages to bring
their favorite songs and/or poems to share - their own or by others - at an
open-mic gathering at Buffalo St. Books on Tuesday, April 17, from 6-8 pm.
If you can't come, send us your songs or poems, and we'll put them on the
CES website for all to share <cesithaca.org> - and make everyday an Earth
Day in our lives.
Just a taste _

*Earth Day*
*I am the Earth
And the Earth is me.
Each blade of grass,
Each honey tree,
Each bit of mud,
And stick and stone
Is blood and muscle,
Skin and bone.
And just as I
Need every bit
Of me to make
My body fit,
So Earth needs
Grass and stone and tree
And things that grow here
Naturally.
That's why we
Celebrate this day.
That's why across
The world we say:
As long as life,
As dear, as free,
I am the Earth
And the Earth is me.

*Earth Folk*
by *Walter de la Mare*
The cat she walks on padded claws,
The wolf on the hills lays stealthy paws,
Feathered birds in the rain-sweet sky
At their ease in the air, flit low, flit high.
The oak's blind, tender roots pierce deep,
His green crest towers, dimmed in sleep,
Under the stars whose thrones are set
Where never prince hath journeyed yet.
*Influence of Nature*
by Wordsworth**
Therefore am I still
A lover of the meadows and the woods
And mountains, and of all that we behold
>From this green earth; of all the mighty world
Of eye and ear, both what they half create
And what perceive; well pleased to recognize
In nature, and the language of the sense,
The anchor of my purest thoughts, the nurse,
The guide, the guardian of my heart, and soul,
Of all my moral being.
*The Woods and Streams*
Author Unknown
"The woods were made for hunters of dreams,
The streams for fishers of song;
To those who hunt thus, go gunless for game,
The woods and the streams belong."
Lost ****
by David Wagoner****
Stand still. The trees ahead and bushes beside you
are not lost. Wherever you are is called Here,****
And you must treat it as a powerful stranger,****
Must ask permission to know it and be known.****
The forest breathes. Listen. It answers,****
I have made this place around you.****
If you leave it you may come back again, saying Here.****
No two trees are the same to Raven.****
No two branches are the same to Wren.****
If what a tree or a bush does is lost on you,****
You are surely lost. Stand still. The forest****
Knows where you are. You must let it find you.
