> Did you know that in Tompkins County we produce over 150,000 tons of waste a year? That’s about a ton and a half per person, the weight of a large pickup truck. Any guess as to what makes up the biggest percentage of stuff we send to the landfill? If you guessed food scraps, you’re right. Even though almost 60% of County residents compost at home, we still send tons of leftovers every day to rot at the landfill.
>
> Tompkins County residents now have more options to recycle their food scraps. Residents can bring food scraps, free of charge, to two drop-off locations: the Recycling and Solid Waste Center in the City of Ithaca, and Cayuga Compost in Trumansburg. Acceptable items include:
>
> Meat, Fish, & Bones
> Eggs & Dairy
> Bread, Grains, & Beans
> Fruits & Vegetables
> Compostable Disposables
> Paper Napkins & Cups
>
> Food Scrap Recycling can be clean, convenient and comfortable. Stop by the Solid Waste Division office to pick-up your free introduction toolkit, complete with a kitchen caddy, compostable bags, and information about how to get started. The collected food scraps will be composted locally at Cayuga Compost. Composting gets us closer to our community goal of diverting 75% of our waste from the landfill. You save money and we all benefit from less trash, and more compost! For more information, go to recycletompkins.org or getyourgreenback.org.
