Des Moines Register Gets the Jump on World Food Prize Events with
Panel Discussion on Pros and Cons of GE Food
Prompted by the controversy surrounding the awarding of the 2013 World
Food Prize to three pioneers of the GE food venture (including an
Executive Vice President of Monsanto and a founder of Syngenta
Biotechnology, Inc.), the Des Moines Register will present a panel
discussion on the pros and cons of genetically engineered crops the
day before the Food Prize activities commence.
One of the panelists explaining the risks of GE foods will be public
interest attorney Steven Druker, Executive Director of the Iowa-based
Alliance for Bio-Integrity. Another will be Ron Rosmann, an organic
farmer. There will be six panelists in all.
Commenting on the event, Druker notes: “It appears that the Register
felt the need for a more balanced discussion than would have occurred
solely within the confines of the Prize Week official activities.”
The event will be free and open to the public. It will go from 4 p.m.
until 5 p.m. CDT on Oct. 14 at the Cowles-Kruidenier Auditorium at the
State Historical Museum in Des Moines – and will be streamed live from
the Register’s website. The link is: www.DesMoinesRegister.com/Registerlivevideo
Druker states: “Through the live stream, people everywhere can learn
key facts that have long been suppressed – and gain a fuller
understanding of the risks of GE foods than they’ll be able to receive
from the World Food Prize festivities.”
The other panel members will be:
Bill Horan: A partner at Horan Brothers Agricultural Enterprises and a
past chairman of the Iowa Corn Growers Association.
Ruth MacDonald: Professor and chairwoman of the Department of Food
Science and Human Nutrition at Iowa State University.
Gary Munkvold: Professor of seed science at Iowa State University.
Micheal Owen: Professor of agronomy and weed management Extension
specialist at Iowa State University and associate chairman of the
agronomy department. (He has pointed out some environmental problems
that could arise in connection with some GE crops.)
