Thought some of you might be able to contribute toward some of the
children's items this family is requesting. Please respond to the original
sender.

Subject: DINI: Help TC3 Student Heather Swift

Hello all,

Some of you may have heard that TC3 Nursing student Heather Swift lost her
house in a fire over the winter break. She, her fiancé Brian Baker, and her
2 children lost all of their belongings. They basically have the clothes
they were wearing and not much else.

Here are some news stories related to the fire:
http://ithacavoice.com/2014/12/fire-destroys-home-cayuga-heights-no-injuries-reported/

http://ithacavoice.com/2014/12/teen-says-mom-saved-pit-bull-ithaca-house-fire/

Heather is also a 2 time cancer survivor and has had lots of past
hardships. She is resilient and is coping the best she can – trying to be
strong for her family. She’s been a generous & giving member of the
community – an advocate for many causes - and she and I have been friends
for several years.

There are several ways we are suggesting you can help.

They have lots of out of pocket expenses right now and no real way to cover
them until the insurance is finalized, and even then that won’t be fast.
Brian’s boss and friend started a GoFundMe page to help them with some
immediate needs.
The link is here: http://www.gofundme.com/brian-amp-heather

We also have worked with the family to identify a list of immediate items.
Here are some sizes for clothing and suggestions if you can look around
your house and see if you have items they can use.

I am happy to pick items up from your office if you have them to donate.

Thanks for anything you can do to help Heather, Brian, Meredith, and Emery!

CLOTHING
All of the family needs basic, functional, every-day clothing right now.
Warmer winter clothing like sweaters and sweatshirts and long pants would
be the most helpful. They don’t need dress shirts, suits, or dresses. If
you have shoes – mostly what is needed is boots or basic shoes.
Also – warm winter gloves, hats, and scarves would be appreciated.
Sizes:
      Heather
      Tops – Small
Bottoms – Size 6 or small
      Shoes – 9

      Brian
      Tops – XL
      Bottoms – Size 38 30
      Shoes - 13

      Meredith
      Tops – Medium
Bottoms – Size 9 or Medium
      Shoes - 8

      Emery
      Tops – Medium
      Bottoms – 32 30
      Shoes – 12
They also are all in need of winter coats, socks, slippers, and robes.
HOUSEHOLD AND PERSONAL ITEMS
BATH: Right now mostly what they need are small personal items like
tweezers, nail clippers, a nail brush, disposable razors, etc. They have
shampoos and soaps and enough things for showering.
DOGS: They have dog crates but the dogs lost all of their toys. They chew
mostly Nylabones and Kongs that can be filled with peanut butter. They have
dog food so they are not in need of that.
SCHOOL: They will all need to replace basic school and office supplies like
binders, notebooks, pens, pencils, highlighters, etc.
HOME: Blankets are the most important item right now. They are staying in
the home of a generous friend so they don’t need household items.
I know many of you have offered extra cookware, furniture, etc. etc. but
now that is just too overwhelming to try to manage, store, and sort. When
they have figured out what their next housing step is (probably by
mid-April) those sorts of items will be very helpful.
FOOD
-casseroles that can be frozen and heated
-soups
-coffee, ground (they like dark roast but aren’t picky!)
-pasta
-rice or couscous
-fresh vegetables
-peanut butter
-bread or other items to make sandwiches
COMPUTER AND INTERNET
They are working on replacing computers for everyone. They don’t have any
computers right now. Where they are staying does not have internet access
at all so they are using cell phone wifi as a hot spot. If you want to
donate Verizon gift cards – that would be helpful because they will have to
up their GB plan in order to maintain basic internet.
This also means that there is no way they are able to keep up with
answering all of your emails and facebook messages. They are trying to
respond to each of you and want you all to know that even if you don’t get
a response from them right away – that they need your love and support and
very much appreciate it!
GIFT CARDS
If you want to donate any gift cards – the following stores would be the
most helpful:
-Gas cards
-Grocery stores – like Tops & Wegmans
-Verizon
-Target or Walmart
-Amazon or TC3 Bookstore (Heather will need to re-purchase her nursing
books)
While they would be appreciative of restaurants and other entertainment
gift cards – they are not really feeling like doing that kind of activity
right now. They are focused on very basic and functional needs at the
moment.
COLLECTING ITEMS
I am happy to be an organizer of items that people are willing to donate.
It is overwhelming enough to handle all of the processes that are now in
action after the fire, and having to coordinate donations is also a lot of
work for them. I am in downtown Ithaca and I work at TC3 – so anyone
wishing to donate items can make arrangements with me and I can get them to
Heather and Brian and the kids.
