> Win Free TCAT passes on “Dump the Pump” Day with “a selfie” Thurs. 6/18
> Also that day, check out the 2015 Tompkins County Commuter Challenge
>
> In honor of the 10th Annual National Dump the Pump Day all day Thurs., June 18, TCAT is inviting passengers and send “selfies” or photos of yourself using the bus or standing beside a non-moving bus in a safe location. The most creative will win free bus passes.
>
> National Dump the Pump Day is sponsored by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) to encourage people to park their cars, and instead ride public transit or use other alternative transportation.
>
> TCAT will accept “selfies” via email at tcat at tcatmail.com. Or you can post them on TCAT’s Facebook group: EverythingTCAT. (TCAT asks that in taking your photo that you be considerate of your fellow passengers and to not distract the operator driving the bus.) The most original winner, to be judged by a panel of TCAT employees, will receive an annual TCAT Tcard pass valued at $600 (Zone 2 which is good for use throughout Tompkins County). The runner up will receive a monthly pass, valued at $60 (Zone 2). All others will be entered in a drawing for 10 one‑day (Zone 2) passes, valued at $4 each. (Deadline is 2:30 a.m. Fri., June 19 when TCAT’s service period ends for that day).
>
> “The world’s smartest people ride TCAT, along with their smartphones,” said H. Roger Segelken, a charter member of TCAT’s Citizens Advisory Committee, who came up with the idea for a “selfies” contest. The committee is a group of TCAT riders who provide input and suggestions to TCAT.

> In addition, Gary Cremeens from Cornell University Transportation Services will be at several bus stops on “Dump the Pump” day promoting the 2015 Tompkins County Commuter Challengehttp://www.tccommuterchallenge.com Cremeens helped create the commuter challenge with Norma Gutierrez from Way2Go, a program of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tompkins County, whose aim is to provide information about alternative transportation.
>
> Residents are urged to sign up and log her or his use of alternative transportation to include transit, biking, and ridesharing through Zimride.com/Tompkins, Ithaca Carshare or carpooling. At the end of the year, those with the highest score can win prizes such as a round trip ticket to New York City on the Campus-to-Campus bus.
>
> “This is a great opportunity to encourage people to take transit and save money at not just the pump, but wear and tear on their vehicle,” Cremeens said. “The IRS standard mileage rate that accounts for all factors in operating a vehicle is 57.5 cents a mile, for a 10‑mile roundtrip commute, that is over $11.00.”
>
> In addition, APTA estimates that the average household can save more than $9,000 a year by leaving your car at home! To calculate your individual savings, with or without car ownership, go to www.publictransportation.org
