> HeatSmart Tompkins Program
> Last year, Solar Tompkins gave residents a simple way to connect with solar panel installers. The result was more than 400 new photovoltaic systems, more than doubling the number in the county.
> This year, Solar Tompkins is promoting weatherproofing and super efficient heat pumps that run 67% on renewable energy.
> On average, 75 percent of the energy used by homes goes for heating and cooling.
> Heat pumps draw heat from the ground or the outside air and transfer it to the interior of the home. They run on electricity and can be used for heating in the winter and cooling in the summer. Both ground-source and air-source heat pumps are effective at the low temperatures typical of this region.
> Solar Tompkins recently selected three companies – Halco, NP Environmental, and Zerodraft – as its partners in the HeatSmart program. “These are fantastic businesses that offer top-notch services,” Johnston, (HeatSmart Director) said.
> At the information meetings, residents will have a chance to learn about the program, meet the installers, and sign up for a free home energy assessment.
> “Enrolling in HeatSmart Tompkins is a great next step for people looking for ways to shrink their carbon footprints. For many families, it will also make immediate economic sense.”
>
> HeatSmart Tompkins is a program of Solar Tompkins, a nonprofit corporation dedicated to advancing a renewable energy future while providing comfort, economic security, and ecological stability. Go to SolarTompkins.org for more information.
> Upcoming HeatSmart Community Meetings
>
> HeatSmart Tompkins is hosting 2 community meetings in each town in Tompkins County throughout September and October 2015. These educational events are being led by Solar Tompkins, and will focus on all-you-need-to-know-made-easy introductions to heat pump technology. These meetings will provide one of three ways to enroll in the program, introduce our 3 Installer Partners, and have dedicated time for attendees to meet, discuss and learn more about the products and services our different partners can provide.
