> Hammerstone: Carpentry for Women, in collaboration with Groundswell Center for Local Food and Farming, will host a free carpentry for women class for immigrants and refugees. The class will take place at a downtown location (TBA as soon as it’s finalized) on Sunday, March 26th, 2017 from 9a – 4p. During this class, students will build skills, strength, and self-sufficiency, as well as community connections. Participants will learn basic carpentry skills while building a window planter box. Open and free of charge to all women immigrants and refugees, this class has limited seating and registration is required. Registration at http://bit.ly/2kuJACf

> Maria Klemperer-Johnson, Hammerstone School’s owner and primary instructor, has worked as a craft builder in conventional and alternative homebuilding since 2002. During that time, she has often found herself to be the only woman on the job site. It was this gender gap that planted the seed of creating Hammerstone in an effort to increase the number of women in the trades. In 2013, Klemperer-Johnson launched Hammerstone’s first woman-only course teaching carpentry skills while building a 160-square foot tiny home. Now, Klemperer-Johnson is utilizing her business to show commitment to opposing social injustices on fronts other than underrepresentation of women.
>
> “It has become clear that it is up to us, individuals and small businesses, to support the disenfranchised, despite what the highest levels of government are doing,” Klemperer-Johnson explains. “As long as you desire to work to your full potential, there's a place for you here!”
>
> This course is free of any charge to immigrants and refugees. If you are not an immigrant or a refugee but want to help support this class, Hammerstone welcomes donations to assist in funding this free class at http://bit.ly/2k0FPk8. If you cannot contribute monetarily, you can show your support by offering transportation, childcare, lunches, or lodging. Contact info at hammerstoneschool.com to offer a contribution.
