> Engaged Cornell has awarded a grant for a course called, Law and Policy of Food Systems to be offered through the Cornell Law School in the spring and fall of 2018. This grant gives us the opportunity to guide law students as well as graduate students and upper division undergraduates from across the university in working with community partners on legal issues they face in the course of farming and other aspects of food production. We will be covering a broad range of issues in partnership with the Tompkins County Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) . Areas we can work with include the process of developing agriculture and farmland protection plans for the county and for individual towns, the impact of the federal farm bill on marginalized groups, food insecurity, local agriculture as well as the local decision making, zoning and land use planning that is protective of farming and estate planning as the farmer population ages. We may be able to link groups with the law clinics in the law school. In addition, students will become familiar with the NYS Agricultural District Law. These are only some ideas and there may be other related agriculture and food related legal issues of interest to your communities. This is a part of a Community Food Systems minor at Cornell which explicitly attempts to tackle questions of social justice within the food system.
> If you would like to work with us, please email Joey at jdg43 at cornell.edu, by January 15, 2018, with detailed information about your legal questions and issues, as well as contact information. If we are able to assist you, we will then contact you by mid-February to establish the parameters of our work together. The grant also provides funding to “support travel for community partners in order to coordinate planning, support for community partners, or other necessary expenses,” to minimize any financial burden.
