Teen Summer Showcase<br>~ Pillowcase Dress Sew-In<br>~ Volunteer Opps<br>~ Fall Class Preview<br><br>-------------------------------<br>YOU'RE INVITED!<br>SewGreen's six-week sewing and job training program for teens is ending with a Summer Showcase, to display the participants' accomplishments to the community, friends, and family. Please drop by the SewGreen classroom at 112 North Cayuga Street, in downtown Ithaca, between 3 and 6 pm this Friday, August 20. Seven teens completed the program, which provided six summer jobs and instruction in sewing, reuse, refashioning, and design. As usual, the kids have exceeded expectations. The projects include a line of summer dresses, innovative skirt designs, and an eight-foot-long giant squid who is surprisingly friendly-looking. We're looking forward to showing off a summer's worth of creative reuse!<br><br>-------------------------------<br>PILLOWCASE DRESS SEW-IN<br>We're winding up our charity reuse sewing project for the summer with a Pillowcase Dress Sew-In on Saturday, August 28 from 11 am to 5 pm. You need only basic sewing machine skills to make these delightful dresses that will be donated to children in orphanages in Central Africa. We have lots of pillowcases and all the supplies needed to make more dresses, and we'll show you how. For more about how to sew the dresses, visit http://www.littledressesforafrica.org/blog/. We are making and collecting pillowcase dresses until September 11, when we will pack them up and send them to the group that distributes them. PRE-REGISTRATION for the Sew-In is requested so we can get an idea of how many people to prepare for. Thanks!<br><br>-------------------------------<br>SEWGREEN VOLUNTEERS NEEDED<br>Work a shift at the SewGreen store! It's fun and inspiring, especially if you like to sew, knit, or do other needlecrafts. We need volunteers for various shifts. Contact Wendy at coord@sew-green.org for a schedule and more information. Training is provided, and volunteers get special perks! We also need volunteers to help teach sewing to students of all ages. A knowledge of basic machine sewing and a joy of working with diverse groups is all that's needed. If you have more advanced skills, we'd love to talk about how you can contribute to our class offerings. Among the offerings will be after-school sewing for children, Friday night open studio time for teens, and weeknight and Saturday classes for all ages. Watch for a new PJ class, introduction to sergers, figure drawing for fashion, sock monkey day, and of course beginning sewing for anyone who wants to learn.
