Both groups are diverse, with representatives of multiple countries, different education and socio-economic levels and often speaking multiple languages.<br><br>Regardless of this internal diversity, immigrants are often recognized as a single people, either Latino or Asian. This loss of individual identity is part of the challenge of being a recent immigrant. The stress of being in a new country is compounded by concern for loved ones in the home country, an unstable immigration policy in the U.S., language barriers, etc.<br><br>Groups like the Ithaca Asian American Association and the Latino Civic Association of Tompkins County have a shared mission of providing education about immigrants to the general community and providing assistance to newcomers to our community. <br><br>This year the two groups will hold activities on Saturday, September 25 to celebrate the many ways immigrants contribute to our community.<br><br>Ithaca Asian American Association (IAAA), Downtown Ithaca Alliance (DAA) and Cornell Community Center Program (CCP) will be hosting its Mid-Autumn Festival Celebration at the Bernie Milton Pavilion, Ithaca Commons to celebrate the grand opening of the Smithsonian traveling exhibit, Exit Saigon, Entering Little Saigon. The event will begin at 6:00 p.m with Ribbon Cutting Ceremony, follow by the Lion Dance Group of Sifu Sharif Bey ‘s Syracuse Kung Fu Academy, various cultural performances, games and arts and craft activities for everyone to participate. <br><br>The Latino Civic Association (LCA), in collaboration with Ithaca College, CUSLAR, will hold an event they are calling 'Celebrating Immigration', as part of the LCA’s celebrations of Latino Heritage<br>Month. Activities will take place at the Women’s Community Building (100 W. Seneca St, Ithaca) on Saturday, Sept. 25, 2010 from 7:30pm to 12am. The evening will begin with a showing of excerpts of the documentary abUSed: The Postville Raid, followed by an informal Q & A with director Luis Argueta. A reception with light food, soft drinks and live music and dancing will start at 9:00pm.<br><br>Join the Latino Civic Association and the Ithaca Asian American Association in celebrating immigration in our community. For many generations Ithaca and Tompkins County have been welcoming communities and have benefited tremendously from the diversity brought by immigrant populations.
