The Significant Elements 20th Anniversary Fair will celebrate reuse and the traditional building trades with fun for all ages at HI’s headquarters, 212 Center Street in Ithaca’s historic Southside neighborhood.<o:p></o:p></p><p style="margin-right: 0in; margin-left: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; ">Historic Ithaca launched Significant Elements in 1991 as a seasonal, all-volunteer program to keep reusable house parts and building materials out of the landfill. Today, Significant Elements is a year-round, staffed program with over 7,000 customers annually. It is a community resource for materials, product and contractor recommendations, hands-on training, and professional expertise. Recently, Historic Ithaca created the Work Preserve program to provide hands-on job training to youth and adults at Significant Elements.<o:p></o:p></p><p style="margin-right: 0in; margin-left: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; ">On Friday, July 22, Historic Ithaca teams up with SewGreen, Share Tompkins, and the Southside Community center to kick off the celebration with a “MEGA Free Friday” with usable house parts and building materials, fabric, and other odds and ends for free from 9am to 5pm in the Plain Street side parking lot at 212 Center Street. Members of the community are invited to bring their own unwanted, reusable building materials to the MEGA Free-Friday. The exchange of free items will continue from 5pm to 8pm at a “Really Really Free Market” co-sponsored by the Southside Community Center and Share Tompkins, to be held at the Southside Community Center’s Congo Square Market.<o:p></o:p></p><p style="margin-right: 0in; margin-left: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; ">Events on Saturday, July 23 will include an “Ask the Old House Experts” panel, traditional building and craft demonstrations, a bake sale, children’s activities, old-timey games, a raffle drawing, and the first-ever “Re-Art Challenge” where teams will compete during the fair to create artworks using reclaimed materials. Historic Ithaca will also hold a storewide sale at Significant Elements and walking tours of the Southside and Titus Flats neighborhoods on both days. Attendees to the unveiling will find out what the lady driving the horse and buggy is wearing, who the face reflected in the “window” is, and how the site played a role in the outcome of World War I.
