I've just heard the sad news that Ludgate's, a wonderful locally-owned grocer, is closing down!<br>
<br>
Having recently moved from downtown to Hanshaw Road, within biking distance to the store, we have come to treasure this shop for its wonderful selection, friendly staff and general awesomeness. So I'm wondering if there is a scenario in which the store could be saved by becoming a cooperative, similar to what the community was able to do for Buffalo Street Books not that long ago.<br>
<br>
Perhaps it is too late in the game to suggest such a strategy, but me and my partner Ari would definitely be able to invest a couple hundred dollars to save a wonderful place that fills an important niche in the economy by providing lots of healthy, organic and vegan food options to folks who live up on the hill.<br>

What do others think?<br>

As many of you know, after a difficult year struggling with<br>
sales at the<br>
store, we have made the decision to close Ludgate's. It's with<br>
a heavy<br>
heart that we will be shutting down this unique locally owned<br>
independent<br>
business, a store I cared deeply for. Simply put, it hasn't<br>
been in the<br>
black for a number of years now -- and we can no longer sustain it.<br>
So I'm writing to ask you for your support in getting the word<br>
out that we<br>
will be open to sell off the remaining inventory, the store<br>
equipment and<br>
holiday trees, etc for the next few weeks. *Store hours **for this<br>
shutting down period **start Tues, Nov 29: Noon-7pm.*<br>
We are selling 10 different varieties of cut trees grown without<br>
fertilizers or pesticides from a tree farmer in Caroline, giant<br>
poinsettias<br>
from a regional nursery (Waterville, near where lived before we<br>
came to<br>
Ithaca) and locally produced wreaths. We even have 5 live trees<br>
(spruces)<br>
that you can transplant after the holidays.<br>
We also need to sell as much of our remaining inventory as<br>
possible. We<br>
have many dry goods (beans, grains, dried fruit, nuts, spices,<br>
tea, coffee)<br>
remaining. Beautiful stoneware crocks & bowls, Weck canning<br>
jars and<br>
cheesemaking supplies. Also, lots of jars of Scandinavian pickled<br>
herring! And...chocolate.<br>
If you can pass the word along to listservs you belong to or<br>
mention it to<br>
people you meet, it would be a great help to us.<br>
