Hello friends,

Last April, about 200 students and young people from Ithaca participated in Power Shift 2011, a huge environmental and social justice conference in Washington, DC. We returned even more determined and empowered to jumpstart the clean energy economy, and thus The Green Umbrella: NY Youth for a Just and Sustainable Future was born.

The Green Umbrella is a coalition of young people working to move beyond fossil fuels and transition into a clean, green economy that is just and equitable for all. We are creating a network of high schools, colleges, universities, and non-student youth throughout the state that will work to preserve our future.

We’re currently planning a convergence in Albany called Power Shift NY, which will provide young people of all backgrounds with powerful training to build the movement for climate justice, and demand a 100% clean energy economy. From April 27-29, 2012, Power Shift NY will enable young people to become agents of change on our campuses and in our communities, protect New York from hydrofracking, and hold our elected leaders accountable. To do this we will need your help!

We in the Green Umbrella are all doing this work on a volunteer basis and many of us have already devoted not only hours, but personal resources to get the ball rolling. However, we can’t do it alone. Right now we are holding an online fundraising campaign to cover the basic costs such as the conference space, sound systems, and pamphlets that will be needed over the course of the weekend. The rest of the money that we will need will be covered by registration fees of the event and even door to door fundraising. All I ask is that you do what you can if anything. There are different levels to donate, but if you can do more please do.

Once you have looked over the fundraising site, please feel free to contact me with any questions and feel free to inquire what I might be able to offer as thanks. And as always, please pass the word along to your friends and family.
