<b>When there are no cars on the streets,
people can play! </b>The 8<sup>th</sup>
edition of <span><i>Streets
Alive!</i> rolls into the streets on the first of May and launches National
Bike Month in Ithaca with attitude, and drum rolls, too. West </span>Court Street and North Cayuga
Street will be closed to cars and open to people to bike, walk, roll, dance,
play and hang out with neighbors and friends.
It has become one of Ithaca’s favorite community events, and families
look forward to the rare opportunity to freely roam the open streets for an
afternoon. Margot Brinn, who’s come out
to almost every <i>Streets Alive!</i> since
the first one in 2012, says,“It is such a relief to have my grandchildren on
the street and not feel afraid for them.”</p><p class="MsoNormal"><i><br></i></p><p class="MsoNormal"><i>Streets Alive!</i> is
a model green event with very little waste ever produced. This year, the
organizers have challenged themselves to deliver as much of the necessary event
equipment by bicycle as possible. “If
people can do full house moves by bike, we can make <i>Streets Alive!</i> happen by bike too!” states Jennifer Dotson, founding
steering committee member and executive director of Ithaca Carshare. </p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0.0001pt"><br></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0.0001pt">For people
joining in the event, a lot of fun can be had in just one area, but traveling
the whole route pays off. At the Ithaca
High School end, there’ll be the Ithaca Youth Bureau bike rodeo, Boxy Bikes
cargo bikes and electric bikes, a TCAT bike rack to test out, and the Physics
Bus too. At the GIAC end, enjoy music,
food and activity with Cultura’s Cinco de Mayo Festival, plus GIAC Beats
Alive!, GIAC Jumpers, Primitive Pursuits, and the Children’s Garden Anarchy Zone. Along the route, catch Ryan Zawel & Haiti
Horns filling the air with New Orleans style music as they march from IHS to
GIAC. Or try out some zumba at Finger
Lake Fitness Center’s Dancing in the Streets.
Borrow a bike from Boxy Bikes, or bring your own. Those who come out at the start at 1pm can
experience Yamatai Taiko Drummers drum roll the streets to life at the corner
of Court & Cayuga. Plenty more
planned and unplanned activities occur at every <i>Streets Alive!</i> It takes a village to make the streets come alive, and

volunteers are needed to secure the streets for the safety of all. Anyone age 16 and up can join the crew of

Tompkins is now officially the lead organizer for <i>Streets Alive!</i>, with an extensive and dedicated team of individuals

Ithaca <i>Streets Alive!</i> took place on
Sunday September 23<sup>rd</sup> 2012, and this May’s will be Ithaca’s 8<sup>th</sup>
event. Many of the founding organizers still direct
the effort, in part because the community feedback and enthusiasm has been
phenomenal throughout the years. And
also because <i>Streets Alive!</i> helps
build the movement for better biking, walking and rolling conditions in Ithaca
and Tompkins County for every day, all
